Mr. Robert James Sutkowski, 89, of Ellwood City passed away peacefully on Friday, February 16th, 2024 at Northview Estates surrounded by his family members, while listening to his favorite polka music.
Robert was born on May 18th, 1934 in Ellwood City to the late Stanislaw and Caroline (Pogozelec) Sutkowski. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1952, where he was captain of the football team. He was a stand-out center player and was offered scholarships to Duke, Notre Dame, and others. Robert worked at Aetna Standard as a machinist for over 30 years until the closure of the mill. He then worked as Herr Voss as a machine Shop Supervisor for over 10 years.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and proud member of Rock Point Boat Club. Robert enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in St. George, Pa on the Allegheny River. He also served as an Ellwood City Volunteer Fireman for many years, eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant. Robert was a skilled woodworker, spending hours in his woodshop making furniture and toys for family and friends. He and his wife hosted Sunday dinners for decades. His favorite line was “Having 250lbs of potatoes in the fruit cellar was like having money in the bank!”
Robert is survived by his wife, Barbara Joann (Stasick) Sutkowski whom he married on May 14th, 1955 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, they have been together for 68 years, he is also survived by his sons, Jim (Terry) and Rob (Judy) Sutkowski both of Ellwood City, grandchildren, Erica (Chris) Gray, Abby (Bob) Maine, Hannah (Kyle) Jamison, Paul Sutkowski, Autum (Gary) Nace and Jonathan (Chelsey) Shingler, great-grandchildren, Bryn, Declan, Gracie, Tynan, River, Cruz, Londyn, Elin, Bria, Eilee, Chase and Chloe, and sister, Leona Wolfe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Loraine, daughter-in-law Cheryl (Pietrcollo) Sutkowski, granddaughters, Alexandra and Alexa, brothers, Edmond, John, Stanley, and Ray Sutkowski, and his sister, Dorothy Flecher.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024 from 3-7pm at the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home and Crematory Inc.. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday, February 21st at 10:00 am at the Divine Grace Parish, Holy Redeemer Church with Father James Wehner Officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
