Ellwood City Police Boxing Club Hosting Saturday Night Fights

Are you ready for bouts full of blow-by-blow, bob and weave brawlers?

Don’t miss Saturday Night Fights at the SOI Club, 808 Lawrence Ave., Ellwood City, tomorrow, November 4.

Hosted by The Ellwood City Police Boxing Club, it’s an event that is sure to thrill.

The doors open at 5 p.m., which gives spectators just enough time to grab food and drinks, which will be for sale, before the fights begin at 6 p.m. Cost is $20 for general admission and $25 for ringside.

Coach Jack Maine of the ECPBC said there will be 13 fights in total.

“Three fighters are basically the same level as professional.”

Maine said Ellwood City will have two fighers Mason Johnson, 13, 105 lbs  will fight Gavin Alford, Boyce Boxing, Pittsburgh; and Conner Bollinger, 13, 117 lbs will fight Anthony Isaac, Sanctuary Boxing, Pittsburgh.

He said Jordan Carr, Ellwood City, who fights for an organization in New castle, will face James Ross, of Pittsburgh Boxing.

In addition, Devon Siegfried, Golden Gloves Champion will be there to support the fighters.

“It will be a great night,” Maine said. “It’s a family-friendly event.”

Maine said he is grateful for Volunteer Tracey Hughes who helped secure donations for refreshments from area businesses including Red Hot, Tony’s Beer Distributor, Pete’s Uptown, and Meyer’s Auto Group.

Maine said the area businesses have been wonderful in supporting the boxing club.

Hughes said Maine and fellow coach Bob Boyle are amazing men and coaches.

“They do whatever they can to promote this club and be there for the community.”

In case you didn’t know that Ellwood City had a boxing club, it has actually been around for decades. The group offers an outlet for fitness in addition to mentoring area.

They practice and workout in the basement of the borough building, the gym has a ring, punching bags, and nostalgic newspaper clippings and posters papering the walls and telling a rich and interesting story of the organization’s history.

The coaches have generational ties to the group. Jack Maine Jr. has been part of the organization since the 70s when he was throwing punches in the ring. Now Maine coaches. His dad Jack Maine Sr. was one of the coaches along with John Dahl who worked to secure a gym for the program.

Boyle has been a coach for more than 25 years. Before coaching, he got his start in boxing right in the ring.

The gym is open to all area boys and girls aged 10 and older.

The group runs soley on donations to continue its programming.

The group welcomes anywhere from five to twenty-five kids during the gym hours, and they are always accepting new boxers.

ECPD Boxing Club has traveled all over the U.S. and a few international destinations to attend events and fights. Some locations on their resumes include Tennessee, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Cuba, Ireland, and Armenia.
