Playoff Bound Wolverines Volleyball Split Matches This Week

The Ellwood City volleyball team split two section matches this week, knocking off Laurel on Thursday after falling to Shenango on the road Tuesday.  The Wolverines record rests at 10-5 Overall and 8-4 WPIAL Section 2A-1, good for a top-four spot in the section that earns the team a playoff berth.

On Tuesday, the Wolverines were defeated in five sets by the Wildcats. After a first set victory, Ellwood City split the next two sets and held a 2-1 advantage in the match before Shenango (8-4 Overall) rallied to collect the final two set victories to win the match 3-2 on its homecourt.

Two nights later, Ellwood City responded with a straight set, 3-0 victory over Laurel (4-11 Overall). After the Wolverines took the first two sets with relative ease, the third set was a tighter affair with Ellwood City finally taking the final set 28-26 to earn the match victory.

The Wolverines volleyball team – who have clinched their 2023 playoff berth – will wrap up its regular season next week with three matches on the schedule. Ellwood City will host Central Valley on Monday at 7:30 p.m., and then travel to Beaver Falls on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. section match. The Wolverines wrap up their regular season on Thursday evening when they will host the undefeated section leading Beaver Bobcats at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln High School.
