Big Fifth Inning Propels Riverside Over Freeport

Riverside put up five runs in the fifth inning to race away to its way to a 9-1 victory over Freeport on Monday in WPIAL Class-3A quarterfinals action.

The top seeded Panthers advance to play #4 seed East Allegheny at Pullman Park in Butler today (Tuesday) at 2:00 p.m. with a championship game berth on the line.

On Monday, Ashton Schlosser, Hunter Garvin, and Mitch Garvin each had RBIs in the big inning that quickly made a four run game a 9-0 advantage.

Riverside opened up its scoring in the second inning when Evan Burry singled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs.

Christian Lucarelli was credited with the victory for Riverside. The righthanders, and Duke University commit, surrendered one run on two hits over five and a third innings, striking out 12 Yellowjackets. Drake Fox and Garvin entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Riverside collected ten hits in its victory. Burry (2-5, 1 RBI, 2 runs), Garvin (2-3, 3 RBI, 2B, BB), and Schlosser (2-3, 2 RBI) each had multiple hits for the Panthers.  Riverside batters collected nine walks off three Yellowjacket pitchers.

Michael Hanz took the loss for Freeport. The hurler went one and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out two. Brady Stivenson led Freeport with two hits in four at bats as the Panther pitching allowed only three hits in the contest.

In other Class-3A action on Monday includes East Allegheny besting Mohawk 5-4, #6 seed Neshannock knocking off Youth 2-1, and #2 seed Avonworth dispatching Shenango 9-2. Avonworth will square off against Neshannock in the other Class-3A semifinal game scheduled to follow the Riverside game on Tuesday at Pullman Park. [VIEW FULL BRACKET]
