Two Panthers Team Up In Opening Round Shutout Victory Against Valley

Riverside defeated Valley 8-0 on Thursday in the opening round of the WPIAL Class-AA Playoffs as two pitchers combined in a 16-strikeout shutout performance.

Ronnie Harper earned the victory for the Panthers. Harper surrendered zero runs on two hits over five innings, striking out ten. Sophomore Cristian Lucarelli threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen, striking out the side in each inning.

Riverside scored three runs in the fifth inning including an RBI triple by Bo Fornataro that stretched out the margin of victory.  The Panthers opening up the scoring with two runs in the third frame.

Riverside tallied six hits in the game but were blessed with 12 walks by Valley pitchers. Evan Burry (2-4, 2 RBIs, 2B) and Mitch Garvin (2-3, 2 RBIs) all had multiple hits for the Panthers. Sean Hayes scored three times while Sam Barber and Hunter Garvin collected three walks each.

Schrock took the loss for Valley. The hurler surrendered five runs on four hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four.

The top seeded Riverside Panthers advance to play #8 Freeport the WPIAL Class-AA quarterfinals on Monday at Pullman Park at 7:30 p.m.  Freeport dispatched of South Allegheny 10-2 on Thursday.
