NEW CASTLE – Today, the Lawrence County Commissioners announced two public events as a part of their Link Up Lawrence initiative, a project that kicked off last month and is assessing the quality and availability of broadband internet in the County.
The Commissioners are hosting an open house on May 11 and a virtual workshop on May 18 to share information about the project and gain insight into internet experiences residents, businesses, and organizations. Additionally, the deadline for the survey and speed test, which is a vital part of public feedback, is being extended to Friday, May 26.
“We welcome the participation and input of everyone in Lawrence County as community input will provide us with a more holistic, data-driven understanding of internet availability, service, and speed within our county,” said Commissioner Dan Vogler.
Interested individuals are invited to learn more about the goals for broadband internet in Lawrence County and take the survey and speed test during the open house on May 11 from 12:00-3:30 p.m. in the commissioners’ meeting room on the first floor of the Lawrence County Government Center at 430 Court Street in New Castle. The free-flowing setup will allow for engaging discussions about the project and user experiences.
“We are striving for a fully connected Lawrence County in which everyone has access to reliable high-speed internet, and the activities occurring through the Link Up Lawrence initiative are the first step in making that dream a reality,” said Commissioner Brian Burick.
The virtual workshop, which is scheduled for May 18, is an opportunity for the county to hear from residents and stakeholders about connectivity issues and broadband goals. The evening session is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. to encourage participation. Registration is free and will be accepted until the beginning of the workshop. “In today’s society, it is no longer acceptable to have communities with little to no internet access,” said Commissioner Loretta Spielvogel. “We started Link Up Lawrence so that we can move to close the digital divide and bring broadband to our unserved and underserved communities.”
For those unable to attend the open house or virtual workshop, the broadband survey and speed test will be available at www.LinkUpLawrence.com until May 26. Printed copies of the survey are also available. Anyone who wants a printed copy of the survey can have one mailed immediately by contacting the Lawrence County Department of Planning and Community Development at 724-656-2144.
