ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: RHS/LHS Girls Basketball

The Ellwood City girls basketball team was busy this week with three games on the schedule.

The Lady Wolverines collected its lone win of the week with a non-section road victory Wednesday night over New Castle. After trailing by nine entering the final quarter, Ellwood City rallied for a thrilling 48-47 victory.

Claire Noble finished with a double-double (15 points, 15 rebounds, 3 steals) to lead a well rounded offensive attack for Ellwood City. Six players scored in the victory, with three bench players (Elsie Sturgeon, Abby Caminiti, and Caitlin Kreitzer) accounting for 19 points and five steals.

The girls were defeated 57-39 on Monday by the section leading Laurel Spartans and 66-25 in non-section action by Union on Thursday to round out their busy.  Delanie Sturgeon was the lone double figure (11 points) scorer on Monday while Noble finished with ten points in defeat on Thursday.

Ellwood City now holds a 6-9 record (1-4, Section 1-3A) and next hosts section foe Neshannock on Thursday 1/26.

The Riverside girls basketball split their two games this week, picking up a 51-37 victory over Ambridge Thursday night after the Panthers were defeated by Mohawk on Monday.

Delana Fox led the charge on Thursday, collected a double-double (17 points, 15 rebounds) while Brooke Wissinger joined her in double figures with 10 points for the Panthers. Sam Rosenberger added nine points (10 rebounds) in the victory. Riverside used a 17-point second quarter surge to race out to a 27-15 halftime advantage.

Fox was the leading scorer for the Panthers on Monday, finishing with seven points (5 rebounds), but Riverside was downed by section foe Mohawk 53-16. Offense was difficult to come by in the first half for Riverside as the Panthers trailed 24-3 at halftime.

The Lady Panthers (3-8 Overall, 1-4 Section 1-3A) next host a non-secton game on Monday against Union Area.

The Riv-Ell rematch looms for both girls squads, as the Panthers will host Ellwood City on Monday, January 30th.
