Project Linus to Bring Warmth, Comfort to Those in Need

Warmth is vital to a happy healthy life, and Project Linus brings that warmth and comfort to those in need.

Lawrence County now has its own Project Linus Chapter led by Josalyn DiFrischia.

Project Linus is a non-profit organization that is run by volunteers that make homemade blankets for children. They are delivered to Emergency Rooms, Outreach Programs, Fire Stations, Women’s Shelters or any child in need of a blanket.

Not only is the new Lawrence County Chapter looking for blanket donations, volunteers are also needed.

If you are wondering how to become a volunteer (also known as blanketeers), making blankets is the key.

“You are welcome to make any homemade blanket such as crocheted, fleece (tied), flannel or quilts,” DiFrischia said.

A blanket drop off is available at Wurtemburg United Methodist Church (1244 Portersville Rd. Ellwood City, PA 16117).

The Project Linus group will meet at the Wurtemburg United Methodist Church on January 3 from 6 to 7 p.m. where interested parties can drop off a blanket or learn more about the organization.

“You are welcome to stay and show everyone the blanket you made, or you are welcome to drop it off at that time,” DiFrischia said.

Meetings will be held the first Tuesday of every month.

Project Linus is a national organization with a distinct mission and goals.

Mission:

  • FIRST: Provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”
  • SECOND: Provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

Goals:

  • To maintain and exceed the current level of quality service and compassion, despite unprecedented growth, for the children and families receiving new handmade comfort across the country.
  • To sustain and support the over 300 chapter coordinators, and newly formed chapters through ongoing training, communication and appreciation efforts.
  • To remain responsive and grateful to an estimated 80,000 volunteers nationwide.
  • To secure funding to support the general operating expenses and program services of the organization, thus providing opportunity for the fulfillment of our mission.
  • To concentrate full effort and energy on the mission of Project Linus.
