The 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic will begin on Monday, July 25 at Freidhoff Field in the Ewing Park Baseball Complex.
The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the nation next to the Little League World Series which celebrates its’ 75th tournament this season.
Eight teams will compete for the title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament field is as follows: Ellwood City, West View/Ross, New Castle, Shaler, Laurel, Neshannock, Central Valley and Shenango. The tournament will also feature the 21st Home Run Derby before the first three contests for each team.
Through the years, 27 different baseball organizations from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer Counties counties have won the tournament.
Ellwood City, with 14 championships, has won the most titles. Beaver Falls is second on the list with 10 crowns and New Castle in third place with seven titles. Ellwood City won its’ last title in 2020, Beaver Falls in 1979 and New Castle in 1993. Last year, Riverside captured the tournament championship dethroning the two-time defending champion Ellwood City squad.
