Trudy (Gertrude) Catherine Wigton, 94

Trudy Wigton, 94, of Portersville, Pennsylvania, died on July 2, 2022, at the Butler Memorial Hospital. Trudy was born on October 20, 1927, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Leora and Arnold McAllister. She was the grand-daughter, and namesake of, Gertrude McAllister.  She had two siblings, Robert and Richard McAllister, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Lincoln High School, Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.  She was married to John Henry Wigton, deceased, for more than fifty years. “Johnny” was the love of her life and together they grew fruits and vegetables, canned, and shared the bounty provided by the land they tended.  She was a Christian by faith.  Most recently, she attended Wurtemberg Presbyterian Church.

Trudy is survived by her three daughters Valerie Estey (Terrance) of Acton, Massachusetts; Marcia Pratt (Joseph) of Ellwood City; and Melanee Sinclair (Donald) of Wheeling, West Virginia; five grandchildren, Shannon Williams (Eric) of Hudson, Massachusetts; Danielle Woodhead (Kraig) of Portersville, Pennsylvania; Erin Tracey (Paul) of Abington, Massachusetts; Adam Pratt of Boardman, Ohio; and D. Chatham Sinclair III of Wheeling, West Virginia; and six great grandchildren, Annabelle Woodhead, Benjamin Tracey, Sydney Woodhead, Ella Williams, William Tracey, and Lyddie Pratt.

Trudy was a Lifetime Member of the Pleasant Hill Grange, Portersville, Pennsylvania, where she served many years as the Master, Matron, and Women’s Activities Director. Trudy attended the Lawrence County Fair annually, competing in numerous arts and crafts, baking, and canning categories and garnering numerous award ribbons. Trudy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ellwood City, Pennsylvania for most of her life where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Summer Bible School director, Sunday School Superintendent, church historian, and Lay Pastor. She was active in the church’s Wednesday Soup Kitchen, a member of the “Apple Dumpling Gang”.  She was a thirty-year co-chair of the “Do and Save Homemakers’” group. She enjoyed camping as part of the Take it Easy Camping Club. She coordinated funeral dinners for decades. Trudy founded the first Girl Scout Troop in Frisco and served her community as a Troop Leader in Wurtemburg for years.

A Frisco girl at heart, she moved to the Ellwood-Portersville Road in 1958.  She loved living in the country in the brick home she built with John.  She considered it her own piece of heaven and could never imagine having to move from it.  We are happy that she was able to live there until the day of her death.  One of the great joys of her life was cutting grass! Trudy mowed her own lawn every summer until this year when her mower became mysteriously “disabled”.

The family will receive guests at Turner Funeral Home in Ellwood City on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at 11:00am at Turner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery.

Trudy grew up in a family that was active in a volunteer fire department. As a resident of a rural community, she knew that fire department volunteers save homes and lives. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Frisco Volunteer Fire Department or the Portersville Volunteer Fire Department. Also dear to her heart was the services provided to active military personnel by the Yellow Ribbon Girls.

Arrangements entrusted to THE TURNER FUNERAL HOME located at 500 6th Street in Ellwood City.
