Butler County School District Selected As Distinguished School Board

The Slippery Rock Area School Board has been selected as a University of Pittsburgh Tri‐State School Study Council D. Richard Wynn Distinguished School Board.

The D. Richard Wynn Award was presented at the 73rdAnnual School Board and Distinguished Educator Banquet, held on March 3, 2022 at the Edgewood Country Club.

In a congratulatory letter to school district superintendent, Dr. Alfonso Angelucci, the University of Pittsburgh Tri‐State Study Council’s director, Dr. Diane Kirk, stated, “Tri‐State looks forward to adding your district’s Board to the list of D. Richard Wynn award winners for its significant accomplishments over the past two years.”

“Completing a renovation project at our Moraine Elementary School, focusing on in‐person learning, and wisely utilizing stimulus funding for the betterment of students’ education are surely some of the factors that went into our School Board being recognized,” stated Angelucci. “It is such an honor. The Tri‐State Study Council is a caring, reputable resource for many school districts in our area.”

Sara Whitman, School Board president during the years of 2020 and 2021 said, “Teamwork. SRASD could not have been successful the past two years without our strong team of nurses, teachers, administration, board members and students. We learned the value of being flexible and adaptable, always looking for the positives.”

Current Board President, Vito Pilosi, echoed a similar message stating, “Receiving the Richard Wynn Award is a great accomplishment for the Slippery Rock Area School District given the challenges to education created by the global pandemic over the last two years. Safely educating our students in our classrooms was the goal. Achieving that goal could not have been accomplished without the support of our board, administration, staff, contractors, parents and taxpayers.”

Approximately 100 attendees were on hand at the banquet, which also feted the Baldwin‐Whitehall Area School Board. Seneca Valley superintendent, Dr. Tracy Vitale, was named the 2022 Distinguished
Educator at the event.

The D. Richard Wynn Award was commissioned by Tri‐State’s Executive Committee during the 1988‐1989 school year to symbolize the contributions of Dr. D. Richard Wynn. He promoted the idea that
decision making by the School Board and administrators should move from conflict to compromise. His idea was frequently referred to as the “win‐win” process as he believed that students would be the true beneficiaries of this tactic. Recipients of this award demonstrate exemplary practices by school boards and school district personnel in addressing important issues while successfully managing the issues to the benefit of their community.
