The annual Ellwood City Area Historical Society Scholarship submission is quickly approaching.
The deadline is Thursday April 7, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.
The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will award two $1,500.00 scholarships to two (2) graduating seniors. Graduating seniors from Lincoln High School and Riverside High School who have been accepted to attend a college, Trade School or Performing Arts are eligible. Applications may be received from the High School Student Guidance Counselor or from the Ellwood City History Center.
Each applicant is asked to prepare a 400 – 600 word essay, researched and documented about the Ellwood City area. Suggested topics to be considered include people, Harmony Line Trolley, churches, family farms/businesses. the medical field and social organizations.
The applicant’s name or family identity must not be in the body of the essay.
Applicants may stop at the History Center, 310 5th Street, Ellwood City, PA during normal business hours Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00 am until 2:00 p.m. for general information, previous essay topics and research help. The telephone number for the History Center is 724-752-2021.
The History Center has awarded scholarships since 1999, and has contributed $69,000.00 to 46 graduating seniors.

- 2022 graduating students from Lincoln High School and Riverside High School are eligible. One (1) scholarship will be available to both Lincoln and Riverside High Schools, providing all requirements are met, with the approval of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society’s scholarship committee. In case no student entries qualify from one (1) high school, two (2) students from the other high school may be awarded the scholarships.
- Complete the General Information sheet and remit with written essay.
- Present a written essay to the Ellwood City Area Historical Society scholarship committee per the following instructions
- Historical topic within the geographic boundaries of the two (2) school districts.
- 400-600 words, double spaced, font size 12, researched and documented with a minimum of five (5) noted sources.
- The following topics are to be considered: People, Harmony Trolley, Churches, Family Farms/Businesses, and Social Organizations.
- Do not identify yourself, or your family in any way within the essay.
- All applications must be addressed to the Ellwood City Area Historical Society, “Attention: Scholarship Committee”
Essays may be delivered in person, mailed, or dropped off in the mail slot. All applications must be received by Thursday April 7, 2022 before 1:00 p.m.

Essay selections will be made by the Scholarship Committee based solely on the content of the essay. Winning essays will be announced at the May 9, 2022 regular monthly meeting at the Ellwood City Area Historical Society. Winners will be notified in advance so they may make arrangements to attend, be recognized and read their essays at this meeting. Winners must attend the general membership meeting, Monday May 9, 2022 to receive the awards.

Last year, the Ellwood City Area Historical Society awarded its 2021 Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarship Awards to Emily Ann Borroni and Hayden Christopher Panek at a meeting Wednesday May 5th.
