The Ellwood City boys basketball team, fresh off their first ever WPIAL Championship, will now turn their focus to the PIAA Playoffs that begin this weekend.
The Wolverines will host a quarterfinal match-up at home on Saturday against Brookville with a tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Brookville (21-2 overall) beat Chestnut Ridge 68-58 Wednesday in the District 5-8-9 Class 3A subregional championship game.
“Brookville is a strong test again for us,” said head coach Steve Antuono. “We will prepare as usual and look at them on tape. We will try to figure out what we need to do to survive the next four quarters and move on.”
Jace Miner, a 6’3″ 196-pound guard and Wichita State baseball recruit, scored 27 points (12-19 FG) and grabbed 11 rebounds for Brookville. Miner scored 16 points in fourth quarter. Griffin Ruhlman 13 pointers, Robert Keth 12 points (8 rebounds) joined Miner in double figures.
For Ellwood City, the Roth brothers lead a red-hot charge that has saw the Wolverines capture WPIAL Championship as part of a current 9-game winning streak. Freshman Joseph has averaged over 20 points per game (22.4 ppg) in the past month with brother Alexander contributing at a 17.6 point-per-game clip during the Wolverines five game championship run.
Antuono does not expect the Wolverines to change their game style or approach versus the visiting Raiders.
“It’s never easy, but at this point in the season we can’t reinvent who we are. We will adjust and put in a game plan and see if we can get it done.”
Brookville, comprised of 1,665 students and located in Jefferson Township, has about a 90 minute trip to Ellwood City on Saturday.
ECTV will present the game on the Ellwood City Sports Network (www.ecwolverines.com or YouTube: Ellwood City Wolverines) LINK: https://youtu.be/o5OGPVqjrr4
The PIAA Championship game is scheduled for March 27 at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
According to a PIAA Memo, each participating school will be provided with 25 passes to permit members of the team, free-ofcharge. This allotment includes players, coaches, managers, trainers, and all other non-playing. Anyone over the 25 allotment will need to purchase a ticket, except cheerleaders. We will permit cheerleaders but any cheerleaders over the team allotment of 25 (referenced above) will be deducted from the total number of spectator tickets available for that team personnel.
