The Riverside swimming team will compete the in the PIAA Swimming Championships Friday afternoon at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
For the Panthers team, winners of a pair of golds in the 200 and 400 meter free relays at the WPIAL Swimming Championships, they will look to showcase its relay team in three PIAA relay events and display some individual talent with the Roth brothers each swimming in individual events.
The team swims in the following events: 200 medley relay heat four of four, 200 free relay heat four of four, 100 freestyle heat two of two (Alexander Roth), 100 backstroke heat two of two (Joseph Roth), and 400 free relay heat 4 of four.
The 200 freestyle relay team consists of athletes Alexander Roth, Graham Kralic, Sam Kline, and Joseph Roth and the 400 freestyle relay team consisted of Joseph Roth, Alexander Roth, Ryan Turner, and Hayden Panek.
“As a team we are optimistic about our chances,” says head coach Bill Valli. “Realistically we could win some events but we will have to be better. If we are not on our game we could drop in the standings quite a bit as the competition is very tight between the different teams.”
Joseph Roth, a 6’8″ freshman, earned a WPIAL gold medal and set a WPIAL record by winning the 100 back with a time of 50.92.
“Our performance at WPIALs was truly outstanding and we are hoping that we have a few more great races left in the tank,” said Valli.
The 2A boys warm up from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. with the first event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., and the final at 8:35 p.m. on Friday.
To accommodate all athletes, coaches and officials for the PIAA Swimming Championships and to adhere to occupancy limitations as set forth by the PA Department of Health, spectators will not be permitted. All swimming events will be aired live on Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) and streamed live via the PCN app (PCNselect).
