Freshman Joseph Roth scored 31 points and Ellwood City used an impressive fourth quarter to pull away for a 61-50 non-section victory over Rochester Tuesday night.
Ellwood City outscored the visiting Rams 19-3 in the fourth quarter after trailing by five points entering the final frame.
Roth enjoyed an steady performance throughout the game, scoring six points in each of the first two quarters, eight points in the third quarter, and tallied 11 points in the final frame. For Roth, it is his third consecutive 20+ point scoring effort for Ellwood City.
Steve Antuono added 14 points (2 3-pointers) and Alexander Roth 10 points (2 3-pointers). Devon Hemer led Rochester (4-2, 3-1) with 20 points.
After struggling with only 24 points in the first half, the Wolverines exploded for 37 points in the second half. Rochester was held to a single 3-pointer by Jerome Mullins in the 4th quarter.
Ellwood City (4-3 overall, 2-2 Section 1-3A) will next hosts its rivalry match-up versus Riverside on Friday night at Lincoln High School. Varsity tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
MORE: Sam Hughes scored a team-high 11 points for Riverside, but the Panthers were defeated at home by Moniteau 54-43 in non-section play. Madden Boehm joined Hughes in double digits with 10 points for Riverside. Moniteau used a 22-7 third quarter spurt to flip its three point halftime deficit. Kyle Pry scored a game high 22 points for Moniteau.
