American Legion Post 157 Passes Resolution

The American Legion Post passed a resolution focused on protests by kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem and other protests of social conditions in the United States.  The resolution reads as follows:

Whereas certain groups have chosen to protest social conditions in the United States of America by taking a knee during the playing of our National Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, prior to the beginning of sporting events:

Whereas we recognize the right to peacefully protest under the Constitution of the United States:

Whereas, we, nonetheless, view this particular form of protest as disrespectful, divisive, and counterproductive to the ideals and precepts on which the United States of America was founded as symbolically represented by the Flag and Anthem:

Whereas, we have lain many of our brothers and sisters to eternal rest who have valiantly served under those symbols to uphold the ideals and precepts they represent: and

Whereas, having taken an oath to uphold a one hundred percent Americanism, we continue to serve our communities to strive for those ideals and precepts: now, therefore, be it

Resolved that the J. Wilbur Randolph Post 157 of the American Legion:

1. takes umbrage with these groups’ method of protesting as being disrespectful, divisive, and counterproductive:
2. urges said groups to cease and desist from such a disrespectful display of their Constitutional right:
3. urges the governing bodies of these groups to ban such protests at all events that they sanction:
4. urges said governing bodies to develop a more suitable, less disrespectful, and less divisive form of addressing the underlying reasons for these protests that does not dishonor those who have served under these national symbols, and:
5. urges all Americans to join us by coming together as one nation to uphold the ideals and precepts of equality, respect, and love for each other.
