Meals on Wheels, the beloved program that offers nutritional meals to those in need who are unable to prepare their own meals, needs your help.
The program, which just reopened on April 1st of this year is looking for drivers. Terri Crespo, Meals on Wheels board member, said they recently lost a few drivers and that the commitment is minimal.
A driver only needs to be available once every three weeks for about one hour, sometimes an hour and a half. She said the drivers take the same route each time.
Going strong after 45 years, the program is as successful as ever. Crespo said other than needing drivers, the rest of the operation is in full swing.
“Things have been running smoothly since the program was resumed in April,” she said. “Calvin Presbyterian has been a blessing.”
She had previously reported on April 2 that residents were already complimenting the food.
“We’ve gotten so many compliments about how good the food was and how glad residents were that we are back in business,” Crespo said. “Everything went wonderful, and better than I had expected.”
Without volunteers, though, the warm delicious meals won’t make it to the doors of the residents who desperately need them.
Crespo has been a Meals on Wheels volunteer for more than 20 years. She is joined on a board with Gina McKenna, Sharon McClintick, Grace Fornataro, and Helen Bowers. The five women run the program which operates thanks to the more than 80 volunteers.
Meals on Wheels operates Monday-Friday weekly. Recipients receive a hot meal and a cold bagged lunch—yesterday’s bag lunch included a chicken sandwich, macaroni salad, fruit, and angel food cake.
Food is prepared daily by Mary Jo Carusone at the Calvin Presbyterian Church.
Meals on Wheels serves those in need who are unable to prepare their own meals. For more information on the program, contact McClintick 412-779-2447 or Crespo 724-496-8680 or 724-752-9413.
