Rita MacMurdo, 89, of Northview Estates, passed away in her residence on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.
Born in Ellwood City on December 6, 1929, Rita was the daughter of the late Theodore L. and Margaret McQuillin Patterson. She married George W. “Mickey” MacMurdo on April 9, 1953 and he preceded her in death on December 30, 2002. Rita was a 1947 graduate of Lincoln High School. She attended Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Beaver Falls and graduated in 1950 as a Registered Nurse. Rita began working at Mary Evans Hospital in 1950 until the obstetrics unit moved to the new hospital in 1974-75. She worked there until her retirement in 1987. Rita and George moved to Ft. Myers, Florida in 1999 and Rita remained there after George’s death until 2011. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish. An avid reader, Rita enjoyed her time in Florida and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rita is survived by her children; Barb (Mark) Houk of Ellwood City, George W. “Mick” MacMurdo III of Albuquerque, NM, Dr. Robert “Duke” (Pam) MacMurdo of Ellwood City, a son-in-law, Greig McClintock of Lisbon, OH, 10 grandchildren; Jeremy Hulick, Lauren Henthorne, Jenny Flores, Eric Houk, Krista Newman, Marisa Houk, Bill MacMurdo, Olivia Feit, Tyler MacMurdo and Carter MacMurdo and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Rita was preceded in death by two daughters, Sandra MacMurdo and Charlene MacMurdo McClintock, a great-grandson, Finn Anthony Houk and two sisters, Nellie Wehman and Leona McCandless.
Friends will be received on Thursday, November 7th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport.
A Blessing Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, November 8th at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Mark Thomas of Holy Redeemer Parish. Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made in Rita’s name to the Ellwood City Area Public Library, 415 Lawrence Ave., Ellwood City, PA 16117.
