Ellwood City (13-3 overall) was led by Danielle McCowin’s 11 kills. The Wolverines jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set but ultimately fell victim to a string of 10 straight service points from North Catholic libero Sophia Elias in the set.
The team entered the playoffs receiving votes in the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association classification Top 10 rankings published the last week of the regular season.
The team is the first in school history to advance to the quarterfinal round of WPIAL playoffs. Ellwood City defeated Seton LaSalle (3-2) last Thursday in their first-round match-up. The team will lose five graduating seniors, Taylor Covert, Saylee Grinnen, Avory Elchison, Madison Krugh, and Gracie Kauffman, but has a strong core of juniors and sophomores who will return, including junior McCowen.
