Riverside senior Skyler Fox has won the 2019 PIAA Class 2A Golf Championship held at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, PA this week.
Fox fired a 1-over round of 72 on the second day of the tournament, separating himself from the field in winning by three strokes.
Fox, who shared the first-round lead with Elijah Ruppert of Brandywine Heights and Cam Colbert of Hickory, collected two second-round birdies Tuesday en route to a 144 two-round total (72-72). A shotgun start placed Fox off the back-nine to begin play and, after a slow start, played one-under on the front nine to pace himself to victory.
Austin Outman of Cowanesque Valley had a second-round low score of 70 and took second place at 147. Ruppert and Colbert both faded, each finishing five-over on Tuesday and 148 (+6) for the championship.
WPIAL champion JF Aber of Sewickley Academy finished ninth overall with a two-round total of 156 (81-75) for the tournament. The PIAA victory for Fox may surely atone for falling short in his bid for a fourth WPIAL championship last month. The PIAA Title is a first for Fox.
The champion was met with a police and fire escort around 9:00 pm Tuesday night and made his way through streets of Ellwood City and North Sewickley Township before finishing at Riverside High School.
