Wayne Township Consolidated School Reunion Planned

A Wayne Township Consolidated School Reunion has been planned and is set to take place on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

The reunion event will be held at the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church, located at 258 Slippery Rock Drive, Ellwood City, PA 16117 and is scheduled to take place from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Those interested in attending are asked to come with pictures and memories to help join everyone for fellowship and fun. All former students, staff, and families are invited.

The Wayne Township Consolidated School history has not been recorded as far as the Reunion Committee has been able to find. The information about the school is what has been able to be pieced together from what the Committee remembers and what information is available in print.

Wayne Consolidated School opened its doors for its first class as a five-room school in 1936. The school consolidated the following school districts; two Slippery Roch Schools, located by Slippery Rock Church, Locust Ridge School located at the site of the Delmar Golf Course, Mount Hope School, on Dutch Ridge Road and the Brick School in Wurtemburg.,

In 1941, a sixth room was added as well as another room in 1950. In 1953 Matheny School, located on Ellwood-Wampum Road, and Park Gate School, located on 16th Street in Ellwood City were closed and students became part of the Wayne Township Consolidated School.

The final four rooms were constructed in 1954 to handle the baby boomers born after World War II.

On July 6, 1959, the Chewton School District, located on the site of the current Chewton Playground, was dissolved by Lawrence County Commissioners and became part of the Wayne Consolidated School District.

Jockey Moore School, located on Jockey Moore Road, and the Quarry School located on Hollow Road joined Wayne also.

The school closed officially in June 1984.

  1. What was the roaming music teacher’s name that visited Wayne Twp school during the 1940’s/1950’s? Little guy with the round blow tuning thingy that he kept in his suit jacket outside pocket, that was patched from reaching in & out for it so many times
