Junior High Softball Team Loses First Game In Two Years; Record Now 6-1

They say that all good things must end. For the Lady Wolverines, their 25 game winning streak dating back to April of 2017 was snapped by the Laurel Spartans. The Spartans came to Stiefel Park and left with a 5-0 victory.

Winning pitcher Autumn Boyd was dominant in the circle as she allowed just 6 baserunners and tossed a no-hitter. She fanned 21 and walked 6. She also chipped in with the stick as she provided the game-winning rbi with a two-out single in the third inning.

Ellwood City had runners in scoring position in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th innings but could not come up with a key hit. Aliya Garroway reached first base on a two-out walk in the first and promptly stole second. The inning ended on a strikeout.

After the Spartans scored a run in the top of the third, the Lady Wolverines loaded the bases in the bottom half with two outs as Chloe Duncan, Julia Nardone, and Garroway all walked. Once again, a strikeout ended the threat.

The Spartans would put the dagger into the Wolverines in the top of the fifth. Grace Kissick hit a bases-loaded two-out single into left field that was misplayed for a two-base error. All three baserunners came around to score and the lead was extended to 4-0

Laurel scored the game’s final run in the top of the 6th. The run would be unearned as they came up with a leadoff single, passed ball, and would score on an error. Once again, the Wolverines fought back in the bottom half as Garroway and Katelyn Wehman reached first and second via bases on balls with just 1 out. Boyd would stiffen again by fanning the next two batters and ending the inning.

Julia Nardone took the loss in the circle as she gave up 4 runs, 2 earned over 5 innings of work. She fanned 6 and walked 3. Garroway came in and finished the final 2 innings. She gave up 1 unearned run on 1 hit while striking out 3. She did not issue a walk.

The young ladies will look to start a new streak on Monday as they travel to Kittanning to face Armstrong. First pitch is set for 3:45.
