Victories For Both Ellwood Softball Teams On Tuesday

Varsity Softball Team Defeats Beaver Falls; Improves To 3-1

After spotting the Tigers a 2-0 lead on two singles and two errors in the top of the first, The Lady Wolverines would score the next 17 runs to win the three-inning mercy rule shortened game by a final of 17-2.

Ellwood City would score 6 runs in the second inning, all with two outs, to take command.  Kyla Servick started the rally with a two-out single. They would load the bases after Maura Agostinelli walked and Kali Barnett was hit by a pitch.  That set the stage for Ariana Garroway.  The senior catcher launched a grand slam home run over the left field wall to retake the lead.   Anna Ferrucci followed with a double into left-center field and would reach third on a wild pitch.  Maria Ioanilli walked and reached second via defensive indifference.  Both would score on an error by the shortstop on a Natalia Greco pop up.

After starting pitcher Angie Nardone struck out the side in the top of the third, the Lady Wolverines ended things with 9 runs in the home half of the inning. Makinley Magill started the inning with a line drive single into left field.  The bases would then become loaded after back to back walks to Agostinelli and Servick.  All three would come around to score on a triple into the left-field corner by Kali Barnett.  Barnett scored quickly as Garroway laced a double into left field.  After a Ferrucci walk, Maria Ioanilli cleared the bases with a three-run bomb that traveled every bit of 220 feet over the wall in left-center.  Greco walked and then advanced to third on a double by Nardone.  Back to back walks to Magill and Madi Krugh would bring Greco in from third.  Pinch hitter Jenna Vetica brought Nardone in with a sacrifice fly to left field.  Freshman pinch hitter Mollie Street ended the contest with a 2 run single up the middle to plate Magill and Krugh.

Nardone got the complete game win as she struck out 6 and walked 1 in three innings of work.  The lanky right-hander allowed just two unearned runs and 2 hits.

The Lady Wolverines will face their first real test in section play as they travel to Avonworth on Thursday for a 7:00 pm tilt with the Antelopes.

Junior High Softball Team Defeats Neshannock; Improves To 3-0

The Lady Wolverines brought the sticks out early and often on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Neshannock Lancers 15-5 in a five-inning mercy rule affair.

The Lancers started the scoring in the top of the first by plating a single run. The lead would prove to be shortlived as the Wolverines responded with six of their own in the home half of the first. Leadoff batter Julia Nardone started things off as she was hit by a pitch. She immediately stole second base and would advance to third and home on two consecutive wild pitches. Keira Rozanski followed with a walk of her own and advanced to second on another wild pitch. Aliya Garroway brought Rozanski home with a double into left field. Katelyn Wehman joined the rbi brigade as she knocked Garroway in with a single to left. After a walk to Maddie Hicks, Kaylani Leos singled home Wehman with the fourth run of the inning. With Hicks and Leos on second and third via a wild pitch, Nardone struck again with a two-out two run single lasered into the center.

Ellwood City increased the lead to 9-1 with three more in the second. Garroway singled to left with one out and advanced to second on another single by Wehman. After both runners advanced on another wild pitch, Leos brought them both home with a single that got by the left fielder for a two-base error. Leos would score the third and final run of the inning as Trinity Arlet reached on a hard hit ground ball that was misplayed by the shortstop.
Neshannock cut the lead to 9-3 in the top of the third as they scored two runs on a walk, error, and single. Ellwood made it 10-3 in the home half of the third. Nardone hit another laser single into centerfield that was misplayed for a two-base error and would score on a rbi groundout by Rozanski to second.

The Lancers kept fighting as they added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a single, two errors, and a walk. The Wolverines manufactured a run in the home half of the fourth as Wehman and Hicks reached on back to back walks. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Wehman would score on a beautifully executed bunt by Arlet.

The Wolverines ended the game by scoring four runs in the fifth. Liz Mihalko led off the inning as she was hit by a pitch and would move to second on an infield single by Nardone. Mihalko scored after back to back walks by Rozanski and Garroway. Nardone crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Wehman walked to load the bases. Leos sent the Ellwood City fans home on a happy note as she doubled in Rozanski and Garroway to invoke the mercy rule.

Nardone got the win in the circle with a 5 inning complete game. She gave up 5 runs, 2 earned, with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. She also improved her record on the young season to 3-0 with the six hitters.

The young ladies will look for win #4 on Thursday as they entertain New Castle at Stiefel Park. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm.
