POLICE: Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Confiscation; Women Charged With Abuse Of Corpse

DUI Arrest Leads To Drug Confiscation

On Wednesday, March 26, 23-year-old Cody Crawford, of New Castle, was arrested after police pulled him over on 5th Street for reckless driving.

Reports state Crawford was “on Lawrence Avenue traveling all over the roadway” in his 2018 Chevy Impala. He was spotted at a red light at the intersection at 5th Street and Spring Avenue, where he pulled into the furthest right parking space and waited for the light to turn green.  When it did turn green, Crawford continued on, straddling the yellow lines as he went. Police proceeded to turn on their red and blue lights and Crawford pulled in to the parking lot at Seven Eleven.

Police could smell the alcohol emitting from Crawford, also making note that “his eyes appeared very bloodshot red and glassy”. They took in the account of marijuana being involved, and after questioning, Crawford admitted to having some “weed” within his center console. This was found after Crawford was asked to leave his vehicle and perform three administered sobriety tests, all of which Crawford failed.

Police proceeded to take Crawford to the Ellwood City Hospital for a blood draw, which came back whole blood at 0.183%, and he was then released to his parents at 1:20 a.m.

Women Charged With Abuse Of Corpse

Two people were tried and charged on August 31 for dumping the body of 29-year-old Ryan Chiappetta in his vehicle in White Township after he died of a drug overdose. Chiappetta was at Carly N. Wiley’s house the night he passed, according to published reports.

Wiley had gained the help of Frederick Cepris in moving the body and the victims’ car to the area of 23rd Street and 11th Avenue. Police found the car and the unresponsive male on August 22 after a call reporting a suspicious vehicle. Wiley staged the car with drug paraphernalia to make it look like Chiappetta had overdosed in the car.

In published police reports, Wiley, of Chippewa Township, pleaded no contest to abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence on March 11. She was then sentenced to spend between 11 months and 29 days and 1 year, 11 months and 29 days in jail, following with 2 years of probation. However, Wiley will be eligible for work release.

According to police, Wiley had asked Cepris and a witness, who had given police firsthand information about Chiappetta’s death, to help her move the body from her house. Wiley said she did not call the police when the event had taken place because she feared to lose her children if police responded in the report.
