EC Junior High Wins Opener; Boys Baseball Fights Back For Victory

After showing some jitters over the first two innings and spotting the Tigers a 5-2 lead, the Lady Wolverines settled down and scored the next 15 runs to come away with a 5 inning mercy rule shortened victory.

The fourth inning proved to be decisive as Ellwood City sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs. Ellie Kalantzis got the inning started with a one-out single. Chloe Duncan followed with a single and both would score on a single by Joy Hudspath. After Julia Nardone reached on an infield single, both would score on a single by Keira Rozanski. Rozanski came around to score on a double into left field by Aliya Garroway. Garroway came across to score on an error by the shortstop off the bat of Katelyn Wehman. Walks to Maddie Hicks and Kaylani Leos would load the bases and one more free pass to Duncan would bring in another run. That set the stage once again for Hudspath to come through with her second two-run single of the inning. Nardone kept the inning alive by reaching second on a dropped infield pop up. Not to be outdone, Rozanski finished off the fourth inning scoring with her second two-run single of the frame.

The final 3 runs of the game scored in the top of the fifth. Garroway led off with a triple into right-center and would score on a rbi single by Maddie Hicks. After another single by Leos, Duncan plated Hicks and Leos with a single into centerfield.

Hard-throwing seventh grader Nardone got the win in the circle as she scattered 5 hits over four innings of work. She fanned 8 and walked just one. Garroway entered in the fifth to close out the victory. She yielded just one hit and struck out 3 without issuing a free pass.

The young ladies are back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they will host another North Allegheny squad in the home opener at Stiefel Park. First pitch is set for 4:30.
