Two Ellwood City wrestlers have advanced to Hershey PIAA State AA Wrestling Championships. Austin Walley collected a PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional runner up finish in the 182-pound weight class while fellow Wolverine Donavin Chambers placed 4th in his 132-pound weight class.
Walley (33-3) earned an impressive come-from-behind victory over No. 2 Derek Yingling of West Branch in the semifinals to set-up a rematch with Mount Pleasant’s Dayton Pitzer in the 182-pound championship. Walley started strong in the title rematch but was countered by the Mount Pleasant freshman who overcame the early deficit to score nine consecutive points on his way to a 9-6 victory over Walley in the PIAA Class AA 182-pound Southwest Regional championship.
“I wanted to win regionals, but I fell short.” runner up Austin Walley said. “It’s not the end of the world though. Everyone is 0-0 at states, and it’s time to scrap. I’m ready for states!”
Pitzer (39-1) was one of eight WPIAL wrestlers to win titles. Overall, the WPIAL is sending 31 wrestlers to the PIAA championships March 7-9 in Hershey with Ellwood City sending Chambers and Walley.
