Wolverine Basketball Teams Each Collect Tournament Championships

Both Ellwood City Wolverine boys and girls basketball teams collected holiday tournament championships over the weekend.  The boys basketball team took the Mercer Christmas Tournament championship Friday while the girls basketball team upset the host Spartans to collect a Laurel Christmas Tournament championship on Saturday.

Wolverines Win versus Fort LeBoeuf

Ellwood City was victorious against Fort LeBoeuf 63-48 on Friday with the help of Rick Pitrelli, who scored 20 points.

Wolverines ran away with an early lead after an 18-point second quarter, running up the lead to 33-20 by halftime.

Pitrelli was the front runner for Ellwood’s offense with 20 points, including six during the third period. He also contributed nine rebounds.

Broc Boariu was also a key contributor with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Steve Antuono (15 points), Alexander Roth (12 points), and Milo Sesti (6 points) each sunk multiple three-pointers.

The Wolverines finished off the Bison after beating the Moniteau Warriors last night to win the 2018 Mercer Christmas Tournament and improve their record to 3-6 on the season.

The Wolverines play this coming Saturday at home against the Mohawk Warriors before returning back to conference play.

Lady Wolverines Withstand Host Spartans Surge, Collect Laurel Championship

Sophomore Chloe Sturgeon scored a team high of 11 points to lead Ellwood City to a 47-45 victory over Laurel to capture their Tournament Championship on Saturday.

Sturgeon and team tournament MVP, Natalia Greco (7 points), led a group of six Wolverines who scored 6 or more points in victory. After leading by as many as 25 points, the Wolverines withstood a 3rd quarter rally from host Laurel who closed the margin to single digits late.

Ellwood City finally used an offensive rebound and game winning layup by Maria Ioanilli (9 points, 14 rebounds) with under 10 seconds to secure the victory.

Additional scoring contributions were made by Olivia Battaglia (6 points), Isabella Roth (6 points), and Kyla Servick (8 points).

The Lady Wolverines are now 5-3 overall and take on another section foe with a matchup at Neshannock on Thursday, January 3rd.
