Tickets On Sale For “West Side Story”

SHARON – The Jets and the Sharks will take over the Armory of the Arts for seven days in January when the Chrysalis Stage Advanced Performing Arts Conservatory stages “West Side Story” in Sharon.

Tickets are now on sale at the conservatory’s web site, thechrysalisstage.org, for shows at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19 and 24-26, and 3 p.m. Jan. 20 and 27.

The Armory of the Arts, 49. S. Sharpsville Ave., is adjacent to LuLu Beans Cafe.

The show, the first by the Chrysalis Stage, will feature about two dozen students in grades eight through 12 from Sharon, Brookfield, West Middlesex, Sharpsville, Hermitage and Howland, along with a Youngstown State University student.

Tickets also will be available at the door before each show.

“West Side Story” is a retelling of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” – which was an update of work by the Roman poet Ovid – that sets the story in 1950s New York with two gangs replacing Shakespeare’s feuding families.

Leonard Bernstein wrote the music to “West Side Story,” with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents. Jerome Robbins choreographed the piece.
