Mr. Edward S. Fray, 97, of Ellwood City passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at the UPMC Jameson Hospital in New Castle following a brief illness.
Mr. Fray was born on August 14, 1921 in Ellwood City to the late Martin and Mary (Krystynski) Fray. He had graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1940 and is a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish. He enlisted with the U.S. Army on June 10, 1943 and served with the Headquarters Company 75th Infantry Division until his discharge on February 15, 1946 with the rank of Private First Class. He had fought in the battles of the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, American Theatre Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and the Victory Medal.
Following his service with the Army, Ed worked at the Ellwood City Forge for 43 years as a machine operator. An outdoors man he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and working outside around his home. He was also an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football fan. He had a great Catholic faith and was a devoted and loving family man.
He is survived by his wife, Stella (Briczinski) Fray whom he married on February 20, 1954, his daughters, Marian Fray of Ellwood City, Colleen (Joseph) Flecher of Perry Twp., and Patricia (Fred) Herrmann of North Sewickley Twp., his son, Gary Fray of Ellwood City, his six grandchildren, and his nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Arthur Fray, his sisters, Nellie Boots, Minnie Jaskolka, and Helen Janicki, and his brothers, Jack, Samuel, and Carl Fray.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 3-7 pm at the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 am at the Holy Redeemer Church with Father Mark Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Members of the Veterans Honor Guard are asked to meet at the church on Tuesday by 10:45 am to conduct full military honors.
