Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr., 62

It is with great sadness that the family of Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr. of North Sewickley, inform you of his passing on Sunday, November 18, 2018. He was 62.

Mr. Cidade was born on October 22, 1956 to the late Ormenzinda and Eduardo V. Cidade. Eduardo was predeceased by his dear wife, Selina Anne, to whom he was married for 37 years prior to her passing.

On Friday, November 23, 2018, both Eduardo and Selina were interred at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. At the request of the decedent there will be no public services or memorials held.

At age 17, Eduardo enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. From Portland, Maine to Sandy Hook, NJ  he called the eastern seaboard home for much of his enlistment. He finished his 24-year military career in Cleveland, OH, where he retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Class.

After his retirement, Eduardo took to the skies as a Technical Writer for many airlines, including US Airways where he was instrumental in revamping their documentation system. Due to ongoing health issues, Eduardo clipped his wings and finally retired after 17 years of blue skies and baggage claims.

Much to the chagrin of his friends and family, Eduardo remained a supporter of the Cleveland Browns through their bad seasons… and their very bad seasons. Mr. Cidade had two great loves: his family and baseball, and not always in that order. Eduardo possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the game and was always willing to debate the merits of the Designated Hitter, or diagram the physics of the Eephus pitch.

Among his many past times, Eduardo was a stamp collector and member of the National Philatelic Society, as well as an avid reader, but found his greatest pleasure in the company of his grandchildren.

Eduardo is survived by two children, Eduardo F. Cidade, II of North Sewickley, PA, and Melissa A. Cidade, PhD of Silver Spring, MD, as well as his mother-in-law Leta Rose Downs of North Sewickley, PA; further survivors include his three brothers David, George and Francisco of Fall River, MA; four grandchildren Margaret, Joseph, Abigail and Julia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A member of the American Legion, Eduardo believed the will of the people is what defines our nation; therefore, his family is asking that in lieu of flowers or donations that you register to vote, and encourage others to register as well.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory.

I only knew Eduardo for a year, having met him when I came to his home to look at a giant hoard of stamps and supplies last December. At that time I met Ed Jr. as well. I knew that he was in the Coast Guard, and that his beloved had passed and that he missed her terribly. As I read this obituary, I see that he had an amazing life! Had I known this while he was alive, I would love to have just sat and chatted with him for a few hours. I send my condolences to the entire family. Eduardo will be greatly missed.

    • Hello, Melanie! Thank you so much for these wonderful comments!! My dad was an avid stamp collector for 55 years and was still adding to his collection in the days prior to his passing. If you’re still looking to buy stamps please let me know; I’m liquidating dad’s entire collection. You can call the house or stop over any time. Look me up on Facebook and we’ll coordinate! Thank you so much for being a part of my dad’s wonderful life! – Ed, Jr.

  2. I used to see him and his wife every December for many years as they bought their Christmas trees from me at Spotlight 88. Missed them the last few years and now I understand why. Very sweet people and will miss them. Rest in Peace.

  3. Ed was a good Coastee. Always volunteered to help out and had a kind word for whoever he met.

  4. I worked for Chief Cidade when I served at CG Group Sandy Hook in the 80’s. Chief was one of the greatest men I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing and working for. Always had a kind word, a smile, just an all around wonderful human being. He’s someone who I had the upmost respect for. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I knew Ed when we were stationed at First Coast Guard District One in Boston, MA. in the mid 1970s. He was a good friend as was Selina. My favorite memory of him was when he took me down to see the USS Massachusetts in Fall River I am a WWII ship buff as was my Dad and the photos Ed and I took of the Massachusetts that weekend meant the world to my Dad. We touch lives in so many ways and Ed though he never knew my Father he touched my Dad’s heart with joy and happiness through those photos.

Ed and Selina: Fair winds an following seas.

    Till we meet again.

Ed joined our Pop Warner coaching staff when his son played for the Tigers while he was stationed at Sandy Hook. We spoke on a daily basis during football season. Ed was a great positive influence on the players and coaches. Our coaching staff was present at his promotion ceremony when he became a commissioned officer. I still have the silver dollar he gave me. I have been thinking about Ed all day today while watching his beloved Cleveland Browns beating up on the Kansas City Chiefs. I know how much this would have meant to my old friend. I’ll bet he’s smiling right now!!!

  10. My ex and I first met Ed and Celina while stationed in so. Portland, me.
Our children were the same age. I visited them when they were stationed in NJ. We new them for over 20yrs. Excellent people and great friends. RIP
