The Ellwood City Area School District has terminated the contract of varsity head coach Nick Hand.
Hand stepped down prior to the 2018 season due to an illness. Rob Magnifico, who had been with the program for over 10 years, was named interim head coach for the 2018 season, the team’s first in the recently reclassified Class 2A.
“The Ellwood City Area School District and Mr. Nick Hand have mutually and amicably decided that he would not return as varsity football coach for the 2019 season, due to reasons unrelated to his performance as a coach,” said school superintendent Joe Mancini. “The District respects Mr. Hand’s decision and dedication and consideration of the overall football program.”
Hand was hired in early 2017 after working for more than 20 years on the staff at North Hills. Hand took over a winless Wolverine team entering his first season as Ellwood City head coach in 2017. Hand was at the helm when the Wolverines snapped a multi-year winless drought with a 2017 shutout victory over Beaver Falls.
The Ellwood City school board agreed to pay Hand a severance.
Hand is a 1985 graduate of Lincoln High School.
