Thursday evening, along the banks of the Connoquenessing Creek in Ewing Park, a bald eagle was spotted just off the Nature Trail walkway. Walkers who enter the Nature Trail north entrance (nearest to Helling Stadium) may be able to catch a glance of this phenomenal bird.
Bald eagles are most readily identified by their white heads and tails but usually don’t take on that appearance until they are fully mature, around 5 years of age, which is when they nest. Bald eagles can weigh up to 14 pounds and have 7-foot wingspans.
Nesting eagles are particularly sensitive to human intrusions or disturbances, and could abandon a nest. The Pennsylvania Game Commission recommends staying at least 100 yards (300 feet) from an eagle’s nesting area.
