Norma Szabo, 95

Mrs. Norma Szabo, 95, of Ellwood City died peacefully on Saturday, June 30, 2018 in the Northview Estates Assisted Living Facility. Born on February 13, 1923 in Ellwood City, Norma was the daughter of Anthony Young (Iacovine) and Loretta (Fusco) Young. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1942. On June 14, 1945, she married Andrew Szabo and that happy marriage lasted 55 years until his death on December 29, 2000.

Norma was a warm, engaging and giving person to everyone she met. She was an exceptional cook and baker. Her greatest joy was preparing delicious Italian dinners every Sunday for her family. In addition, Norma would often make sheets of homemade pizza and have backyard parties for neighborhood friends. Her pies, cookies and doughnuts were amazing and usually shared with friends and neighbors, as well.

Throughout their marriage, Norma and Andy enjoyed many activities together. They both loved get-togethers with their brothers and sisters, competitive games of 500, family picnics and vacations. After Andy retired, they were able to take many well-deserved trips with their close friends and relatives. They enjoyed dancing and being members of Charlie’s Angels Dance Group in New Brighton. They also spent many hours bowling in various leagues.

Norma’s deep faith was a very important part of her life and she was an active member of St. Agatha and Holy Redeemer parishes. She belonged to the Christian Mothers of both churches, serving as president while at St. Agatha. She attended daily mass and joyfully served as a Eucharistic minister. As a member of Ladies of Charity of Holy Redeemer Parish, Norma distributed communion to local hospital patients, Trinity Oaks residents and church members confined to their homes.

She also was a member and past president of the Ellwood City chapter of A.A.R.P. as well as the Hungarian Women’s Club where she served as secretary for many years.

Norma is survived by three children; Andrew (Linda) Szabo of Center Twp., Elaine Maloney of Ellwood City and Melissa (John) Guzzetti of Beaver; three granddaughters; Beth Ann (Jay) Graham of Akron, OH, Sarah (Chris) Myers of Alexandria, VI, and Abby Cleland and her fiancé, Steven Bass of Seattle WA, and six great-grandchildren; Noah, Nathan, and Gavin Graham and Logan, Ashlyn and Ainsley Myers. Norma is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Theresa Young of Greenville and Mary Ann Szabo of Ellwood City as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.

Being the last of her family, Norma was preceded in death by her 12 siblings, brothers, Alfred, Hugo, Ernest, Earl and Adolph Young and sisters, Jessie and Emma Young, Mary Giglio, Lena Locke, Eleanor McDowell, and Linda Rutter.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 pm at the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services, 309 Spring Ave., Ellwood City. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Redeemer Church, with Father Mark Thomas officiating. Entombment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Assumption Mausoleum. Members of the Holy Redeemer Christian Mothers are asked to meet at the church on Tuesday by 9:50 am to form an honor guard.

The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to the entire Northview Estates staff for their friendship, love, and compassionate care shown to Norma over the past five years. In addition, the family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the exceptional care given recently by Kindred Hospice, especially Rick, Clare, Nicole, Andrea, and Billie Jo.
