The Ellwood City girls softball team advanced in the Class 3-A WPIAL Playoffs with a 4-1 first round victory over South Allegheny on Tuesday afternoon.
Madi Krugh was the winning pitcher for the Wolverines. She went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two.
The Wolverines jumped out to their lead in the third inning and added a run later by way of the long ball — Reagan Mittler connected with a solo shot in fourth inning as Ellwood City jumped to its early lead.
Anna Ferrucci led the Wolverines with three hits in four at bats. Maura Agostinelli and Maria Ioanilli collected sacrifice flies for Ellwood City who scored an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Cortney Woytovich took the loss for South Allegheny. She allowed eight hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out one.
Ellwood City (9-5 overall) is scheduled next to play top-seed, defending PIAA champion South Park (14-1 overall) at a site and time to be determined. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but the WPIAL has had to adjust the schedule because of games that were postponed Monday and will now be made up Wednesday.
The second round game is an opportunity for some revenge for Ellwood City as South Park bounced the Wolverines handily in the PIAA playoffs last year on their way to the state title.
