In a tightly contest, third meeting between Riverside and Aliquippa Thursday night, a nearly half-court buzzer beating 3-pointer by Will Gipson found the bottom of the net and bounced the Panthers out of the playoffs by way of a 53-50 defeat.
Riverside battled the ‘Quips to a 50-all tie late in the contest and used a defensive stop with under 10 seconds to go, but the Panthers block and ensuing loose ball left Austin Dambach only a heave of the ball toward the basket on the opposite end.
According to a report, the ball never made it, as it hit some netting above midcourt. The referees ruled that the ball was out of bounds, belonged to Aliquippa, and put 1 second back on the clock.
Aliquippa found a clean pass to Gipson near midcourt who was able to get off the buzzer beater and send the ‘Quips to the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals on Monday.

Riverside was led by Ty Thellman, who had 15 points and was 8 of 8 from the foul line, and Austin Dambach who finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The game was tied at halftime and Riverside only trialed by a single point entering the final frame.
Aliquippa will face Lincoln Park in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals, a game that will see teams with a combined 5-0 season record against Riverside/Ellwood City.
The pesky, defending WPIAL champ North Catholic Trojans – who knocked off Ellwood City in the first round – also advanced with their 47-34 quarterfinals victory over Washington on Thursday. North Catholic will face Seton La Salle in the other WPIAL Class 3A semifinals.
