Ellwood City Wolverines upset the number two seed, the Steel Valley Ironmen 7-2 in WPIAL quarterfinal baseball 3A action Monday afternoon at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township.

The Wolverines would score 4 runs in the first inning as Steel Valley Starter Tanner Cannon struggled. He walked two and hit a batter and gave up 4 straight singles. Tyler Good had a big RBI single in the first. They would tag on a run in the 4th to make it 5-0 with 2 singles and a sacrifice. Anthony Roth would get the RBI single.
Steel Valley chipped away with solo runs in the 4th and 5th innings, Cannon had a run scoring single in the 5th inning. Elwood City would pull away getting two insurance runs in the 7th inning on 2 singles and a walk, and a hit batter. Mitch Frazier had an RBI single in the 7th.
Good would go the distance for the Wolverines giving up 7 hits, striking out 2, walking none, giving up 2 runs and one hit batter.
Rick Pitrelli had 2 hits, Frazier with 2 hits and an RBI, Noah Rinker had 2 hits and an RBI to pace Elwood City.
Steel Valley ends a tremendous regular season with a disappointing loss and falls to 16-4. Ellwood City improves to 13-9 on the year and moves on to the semi finals on Wednesday May 24th to face number #3 seed Mount Pleasant.

Pitchers Team Up As Riverside Panthers Shuts Out Burrell, 4-0.
Riverside Panthers defeated Burrell 4-0 on Monday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout – the teams fifth consecutive WPIAL playoff shutout dating back to 2016.
An early lead helped propel the Panthers to victory. Riverside scored two runs when Ricky Wass singled with two outs in the second inning.
Cristian Cicchinelli earned the win for Riverside Panthers Varsity. He went six and a third innings, allowing zero runs, three hits, and striking out ten. Ty Thellman recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Riverside.
Edwards took the loss for Burrell. He pitched five and a third innings, giving up four runs, 11 hits, striking out one, and walking one.
Riverside Panthers Varsity collected 11 hits. Anthony Tollari, Cicchinelli, and Wass each collected multiple hits for Riverside. Tollari went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Panthers in hits. Riverside was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Gunnar Boehm had the most chances in the field with 11.
The Panthers will next face Brownsville on Wednesday May 24th with a slot in the WPIAL Class 3A Championship game on the line.
