Samuel N. Ferrante passed away Friday, March 24, 2017 at Northview Estates, where he lived with his wife Minnie. They were married for 63 years and formally lived in Rock Dell.
Sam was born on December 16, 1923 in Chewton, PA to the late Anthony and Lucy Tancreti Ferrante. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1941, he served with honor and pride in the United States Navy Air Corp as airman 3rd class aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin which was known as Big Ben “The ship that wouldn’t die.”
Sam was proud to receive the Navy Air Medal for destroying enemy ships at Kobe Harbor Japan on March 19 “his lucky day” after being the last of only 3 planes that took off before the Franklin was bombed by enemy aircraft with the loss of over 800 men.
Sam worked at Beaver Enameling in Ellwood City, Republic Steel in Cleveland, Ohio, US Steel – Ellwood Works, Ellcast, and Signs by Sam.
Sam was a member of the Ellwood Rod & Gun Club for 55 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Sam is survived by his wife Minnie Chiolo Ferrante, son Sammy, daughter Mary Kay, and son-in-law Joe Morabito. Granddaughters Anna Marie Thompson and her husband Eric all of Ellwood City. Jenny Watt and her husband Brad, great-granddaughter Devin and Luca Thompson and Otis, Alice and Minnie Sue Watt.
Sam, the last of his family was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Bodovetz, Angie Demas and Louise Bobbino, brothers Ralph, Jim, Nick, Dom and Joe Ferrante. His daughter-in-law Elizabeth Ferrante and great-grandson Oliver Edward Watt.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8pm in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday at 10:00am in the Holy Redeemer Church. Interment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday by 9:20am. Members of the Veterans Honor Guard are asked to meet at the church on Wednesday by 10:50am to conduct full military honors.
Memorial contributions in Mr. Ferrante’s name may be made tot he Holy Redeemer Social Services.
