Carmen J. DeGennaro, 94, of Ellwood City passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 in his residence with his loving family at his side.
Mr. DeGennaro was born on July 11, 1922 in Italy to the late Stefano and Assunta Napolitano DeGennaro. He is a member of the Lincoln High School class of 1942 and the Holy Redeemer Parish. Carmen enlisted with the U.S. Army on January 8, 1943 and served with the Company M 14th Infantry Regiment 71st Division until his discharge on Oct. 31, 1945. He was in the battles of the Rhineland, Ardannes, and Central Europe, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. Following his service with the Army, Carmen worked at the Babcock & Wilcox Steel Mill as a millwright in the maintenance department in both Koppel and Beaver Falls for 38 years. He is also a member of the Sons of Italy #608, and the MOOSE Lodge #93.
His great pleasure during the holidays was making his famous cannoli’s and being surrounded by his family. He also took great pride in his garden, his fig trees, and his homemade brandy. He loved telling stories of growing up and the many adventures of his eight children.
Mr. DeGennaro is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Rocco DeGennaro whom he married on October 17, 1952, his daughters, Sue (Craig) Best of Ellwood City, Nita Veres and her companion Joe Barnes of Ellwood City, and Matilda (Gary) Krenke of Petersburg, Ohio, his sons, Steve R. DeGennaro, Frank (Karen) DeGennaro, Dom A. DeGennaro of Ellwood City, Carmen R. DeGennaro and his companion Leeann A. Bush of Dagsboro, DE, and Anthony (Janie) DeGennaro of Ellwood City, his thirteen grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Matilda “Tillie” DeGennaro, and Filomena “Fillie” Blair, his brother, Dominic “Dungun” DeGennaro, his two grand-daughters, Hillary DeGennaro, and Kayla DeGennaro, his grandson, Tyler DeGennaro, and his nephew, Big Steve DeGennaro.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Holy Redeemer Church with Father Mark Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday by 9:20 a.m. Members of the Veterans Honor Guard are asked to meet at the cemetery on Friday by 11 a.m. to conduct full military honors.
