The Ellwood City softball team swung past three conference opponents in three days. The Lady Wolverines shut down Riverside 15-0 on Thursday, defeated Neshannock 11-8 on Friday and finished the weekend with a victory against Mohawk 7-1 on Saturday.
On Thursday’s away game against rival Riverside, Ellwood’s Skyla Greco pitched a near perfect game, striking out 12 batters as her team defeated Riverside 15-0.
The Lady Wolverines consistently scored each inning. The mercy rule went into affect after five innings. Greco didn’t just keep the Lady Panthers pinned on defense, but spearheaded Ellwood’s offense with five RBIs and three hits.
“Skyla pitched a great game, and she was extremely focused,” head coach Gary Rozanski said. “The team top-to-bottom gave her offensive support.”
It was the team’s first game since their win against Beaver on April 6 following a streak of cold and snowy weather.
“It was good to get back on the field and in game mode,” Rozanski said. “The girls came ready to play and were focused and getting the win today. It is always good to be able to get a win against a team like Riverside.”
Due to weather cancellations, the team had to play three section games in a row.
“The girls understand the opportunity that lies ahead for them of this three game stretch of section play,” Rozanski said following Riverside’s game.
Neshannock proved to be the greatest challenge of the group. While Ellwood frequently has pitching domination, Neshannock’s pitcher had seven strike outs to Greco’s six.
However, offensively, Ellwood gained the advantage in the second inning with six runs before Neshannock scored. That lead would be decisive as the Lady Wolverines collectively got 15 hits to the Lady Lancer’s five. Ellwood’s Reagan Mittler and Allie McKelvey each had three hits.
On Saturday’s away game at Mohawk, Greco once again went toe-to-toe with the opposing pitcher but Ellwood’s offense overcame Mohawk. While the Lady Warrior’s only got four hits and one run, the Lady Wolverines were able to consistently score in the second half of the game.
Leading the offense were Anna Ferruci with three hits and Ariana Garroway with two RBIs.
The Ellwood City softball team is now 8-0 overall and 6-0 in their section. They host New Brighton for a conference game tomorrow.
