Bertha J. “Birdie” Hawrylak, 85, formerly of Ellwood City passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016 in the Good Samaritan Hospice.
Bertha was born on June 9, 1930 in Ellwood City to the late Alexander and Verna A. Onada Pavlin. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1948. Birdie had worked at Loccisano’s Grocery Store as a cashier in her youth, and later as a secretary for several years. She had belonged to the St. Agatha Catholic Church Christian Mothers, and served on the St. Agatha Church Bazaar Committee for many years. Her main joy was being with her family.
Bertha is survived by her daughter, Linda Hawrylak of Ellwood City, her son, Joseph (Tammy) Hawrylak of Chewton, her grandchildren, Kenneth Raisor, Leanne Brown, Daniel Raisor, Kimberly Raisor, Joey Beachem, Michael Hawrylak, Garrett Thomas, Morgan Thomas, and Alexander Hawrylak, her great-grandchild, Mason Cole Hawrylak, and her brothers, Alex “Sonny” JoAnn Pavlin of Green Valley, Ariz., and John (Ielene) Pavlin of Torance, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter “Skip” Hawrylak whom she married on Oct. 30, 1954 and passed away on March 17, 1998, her daughter, Janet Lynn Hawrylak, her son, David Hawrylak, and her grandson, David Raisor.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10:00 am in the Holy Redeemer Church. Interment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday by 9:20 a.m. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Hawrylak’s name may be made to the Retirement Fund for the Religious Orders in C/O the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
