The Lady Wolverines and Lady Panthers clashed at Lincoln High School in a non-conference rivalry game on Tuesday for the LGKG Holiday Classic. Riverside won 53-42.
The two teams had started their seasons in a similar manner at the Ellwood City Tip-Off Tournament. As before, Riverside emerged victorious, although the rematch proved to be a closer competition.
In the original game, Ellwood fell behind in the second half, losing 50-32. Since then, Riverside has gone on to be nigh undefeated, falling only to Neshannock. In the holiday tournament, the Lady Wolverines stayed close in the first and third quarters but fall behind in the second and fourth, allowing Riverside to gain an 11 point lead.
The game was full of missed shots, as the highest scorers on both teams averaged 40 percent or less, excepting Riverside’s Morgan Bailey, who had a 63 percent success rate. Both teams made 13 of 19 free throws.
Riverside’s Katie Stang and Bailey were the game’s high scorers, with 18 and 15 points. Also scoring for the Lady Panthers were Sydney Wolf, seven points, Ashley Boehm, five, Abbey Matiko, five and Jordan Annarumo, three.
Defensively, Morgan Bailey had seven rebounds, and Natalie Bologna blocked two shots.
For Ellwood City, Karrington Ketterer broke the double digits with 14 points. Also scoring for the Lady Wolverines were Allie McKelvey, eight, Isabella Roth, six, Emily Brown, four, Natalie Greco, four, Paige Mason, two, Alexis Casuccio, two and Cortni Prine, two.
Allie McKelvey was the overall defensive star with 15 rebounds, and Karrington Ketterer blocked three shots.
Riverside would go on to defeat Beaver 56-54 yesterday and is now 9-1. Ellwood City lost to West Allegheny 71-29 and is now 2-8.
