Riverside used a third quarter surge to pull away to its 59-47 rivalry victory over Ellwood City on Friday.  The victory capped a season sweep for the Panthers in the two- game Riv-Ell series. After a quick six point surge to start the third frame, Ellwood City responded to cut what had become a seven point lead down to a single possession. The Riverside Panthers boys basketball team was defeated by Beaver Falls 68-39 Tuesday night.  Senior basketball players and cheerleaders were recognized as part of senior night festivities prior to the tip-off. Junior Ben Hughes finished with 11 points for the Panthers who could not overcome a 20-point first quarter outburst by the visiting Tigers. Jalen Vaughn (22 points) and Gage McKelvey (21 points) led the offensive output for Beaver Falls (9-11 overall). The Riverside Panthers stifled the Ellwood City Wolverines offense on its way to a 57-33 rivalry victory at home Tuesday night. Ben Hughes, Kevin Kolesar, and Nathan Sciarro led the Panthers offense, while the Riverside defense held Ellwood City to a single field goal in the second quarter, 14 points in the first half, and an overall 23% shooting performance. Ellwood City Defeats Moniteau, Riverside Falls to Shaler

Our two local high school boys basketball teams split their opening games in selective Holiday Tournaments on Thursday. Ellwood City defeated Moniteau in its opening game of a Mercer Tournament while Riverside was knocked off by Shaler Area in its opening game of a Seneca Valley holiday tournament.  Games resume today for each boys basketball team. Panthers Fall To ‘Quip In WPIAL Quarterfinals On Buzzer Beater

In a tightly contest, third meeting between Riverside and Aliquippa Thursday night, a nearly half-court buzzer beating 3-pointer by Will Gipson found the bottom of the net and bounced the Panthers out of the playoffs by way of a 53-50 defeat. The Riverside boys basketball team used a strong first quarter to run away from Mohawk and claim victory in their Section 1-3A finale Tuesday while the Ellwood City Wolverines saw an slim, early lead quickly evaporate in their section finale defeat at the hands of Lincoln Park. Broc Boariu scored 17 points to lead Ellwood City to a 63-54 victory over Riverside on Friday. Ellwood City Wolverines grabbed a second quarter lead that ballooned to as many as 21 points in the third quarter, but had to withstand a furious Riverside comeback to hold on to its victory. Wolverines Defeat New Brighton, Host Riverside Friday

Ellwood City Wolverines boys basketball team won 53-34 against New Brighton on Tuesday with the help of Sean Busby, who scored team high 13 points. The Wolverines scored early, claiming a 24-12 lead at the half. Lincoln cemented their lead in the final quarter, scoring 16 points, to avenge their 2-point home loss to New Brighton in December.  Ellwood City also snapped a three game losing streak.
