Riverside Rallies, Knocks Off Wolverines In Overtime

After trailing by as many as 20 points late in the third quarter, the visiting Riverside Panthers rallied to force overtime and pull away for a thrilling 50-47 victory over Ellwood City Tuesday night. Sophomore Drake Fox’s 3-pointers with under 15 seconds in regulation knotted the game. Ellwood City had led 35-15 with two and half minutes remining in the third quarter after holding a comfortable 22-12 advantage after a relatively low scoring first half. With the winter basketball season quickly approaching, the Riverside Panthers basketball coaches are looking to improve from last years season.  Both teams see areas of improvement and hope to improve from last season. Steve Antuono erupted for 27 points to help the Ellwood City earn a 58-47 road victory over New Brighton on Tuesday. The Wolverines used a decisive fourth quarter to pull away from the Lions. Ellwood lead by one point and halftime and after the teams exchanged 13-point third quarters, continued to hold a one-point lead until the Wolverines outscored New Brighton 27-17 in the final frame to secure victory. Ellwood City will be pre-selling basketball tickets for the Tuesday, January 14th basketball game against Riverside. Ellwood City High School will presale Student tickets for $2.00. ALL ELLWOOD STUDENTS must have the BLUE ticket or a season pass to sit in the Ellwood City student section.  Ellwood City will also presale Adult tickets for $5.00 and  Riverside has received 150 student tickets for presale. EC Boys Basketball Defeat Lions, Fall to Vikings; Riverside Falls at Buzzer

The Ellwood City boys basketball team split two games this week, while Riverside boys team fell on a last second shot to Neshannock. For the Wolverines, coming off its upset road victory over Aliquippa last Friday, two home games netted a victory over New Brighton on Tuesday and a home defeat to Hopewell on Wednesday.  A high powered scoring attack netted the victory on Tuesday that stretched the Wolverine win streak to three games. Riverside used a third quarter surge to pull away to its 59-47 rivalry victory over Ellwood City on Friday.  The victory capped a season sweep for the Panthers in the two- game Riv-Ell series. After a quick six point surge to start the third frame, Ellwood City responded to cut what had become a seven point lead down to a single possession. The Riverside Panthers boys basketball team was defeated by Beaver Falls 68-39 Tuesday night.  Senior basketball players and cheerleaders were recognized as part of senior night festivities prior to the tip-off. Junior Ben Hughes finished with 11 points for the Panthers who could not overcome a 20-point first quarter outburst by the visiting Tigers. Jalen Vaughn (22 points) and Gage McKelvey (21 points) led the offensive output for Beaver Falls (9-11 overall). The Riverside Panthers stifled the Ellwood City Wolverines offense on its way to a 57-33 rivalry victory at home Tuesday night. Ben Hughes, Kevin Kolesar, and Nathan Sciarro led the Panthers offense, while the Riverside defense held Ellwood City to a single field goal in the second quarter, 14 points in the first half, and an overall 23% shooting performance.
