Old Photo Friday: Celebrating the 1930’s

This weeks Old Photo Friday, provided by the Ellwood City Historical Society, is a photo from 1967’s Diamond Jubilee. The news column from 1967 reads: This 1931 Studebaker, owned by B.J. McCandless, added a touch of history to Saturday’s motor caravan which traveled to the Beaver Valley to publicize Ellwood City’s Diamond Jubilee celebration scheduled for Aug. 6-12. Among the local persons who joined in the caravan wearing approprate clothing are, from the left, Mrs. Harold Tritt, Tom Downing who drove the car, Mrs. Arthur Watterson, Mrs. Ed Rouse and Harry McCloskey.

Old Photo Friday: Jail Removed

This week’s Old Photo Friday is a photo of Ellwood residents removing the jail after a court session in 1967. The official release states: Members of the first kangaroo court, from left to right, Bob Miskolcze, Dale Vinroe, Dom Viccari and Jim Beatrice, removed the jail after last night’s court session in front of the Municipal Building. The jail is seen minus its first three occupants, Bill Livingston, Robert Abbatichhio and Robert Kimpel. The jail is expected to house many offenders in the days ahead before the jubilee celebration. Old Photo Friday: Tornado Rips Through Ellwood in 1985

Do you remember when the tornado ripped through Ellwood City, causing damage to homes, businesses, landscape and automobiles in 1985? The tornado, which touched down Friday May 31st 1985, affected numerous businesses and residences surrounding Ellwood City in Big Beaver Borough, North Sewickley Township, Marion Township, and on into southern Butler County. Old Photo Friday: Borough Property Nativity Scene

Although the photos are not very old, they are certainly a thing of the past after a Wisconsin-based anti-religion group threatened to sue the Borough of Ellwood City in 2011 if they didn’t take down the traditional nativity display, which has since been absent from the property. The group, Freedom From Religion Foundation, promotes nontheism and defends the constitutional separation between religion and government, their website states. The last year the nativity was standing on Borough property was in 2011, after the council members voted 4-2 in favor of removing the scene from municipal property beginning in 2012. A council…
