80 Years Ago Today: Ellwood Woman Wins Dollar for Prize Recipe

According to the Twitter user Jon Shifflet, who provides a photo of a printed recipe (photo below), today marks the 80th anniversary that Lillian Hoy of Division Street in Ellwood City submitted a recipe to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for “Calcuttas” and won a $1 prize! The recipe calls for an odd mixture of prunes, rice, chutney, gherkins, bacon and Worcestershire sauce. PHOTO: Mayor Presents Beautification Award

For the past six years, Mayor Court has presented to area residents a special “Beautification Award” sign along with a local restaurant gift certificate. This year the first Award went to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony and Loraine Buzzelli of Meadowridge Drive. The Buzzelli’s were nominated by an undisclosed resident who felt that the Buzzelli’s had spend considerable time and effort into making their home surroundings extra special. Ellwood City Farmers’ Market Set to Open for the Season

The Ellwood City Farmers Market located at the The Beaver Avenue Parking Lot (500 Block) will be opening again for the season starting this Saturday, June 3. A wide variety of things will be sold at the market mostly including homemade and organic items and food. The market will run every Saturday during the summer through October 7th from 8:00a.m. until noon. Live music from 9:00 – 11:00a.m. Free parking downtown.

Lawrence County Commissioners to Vote on Allocation Among 9 Local Municipalities

With nearly $600,000 in funding requests but with only slightly above $100,000 in available funds for 2017, the Lawrence County Commissioners will be voting on where $84,500 will be allocated among nine municipalities in Lawrence County. Due to the counties responsibility to maintain only 27 bridges and no roads, the county commonly has an excess of revenue funded by Pennsylvania’s gasoline tax. They often use the excess for distribution among the local municipalities for liquid fuel-eligible projects. 6th Graders Participate in Array of Fun Activities at the Park-A-Palooza

The Chamber of Commerce held their annual Ewing Park-A-Palooza May 15 for all 6th graders from Hartman and Riverside. There were ten stations for the students to visit, designed to enhance the learning experience for the students in an alternative setting presented by volunteers. The students participate in several physical activities provided by the staff of Air Fitness that encourages team building and fitness. United Fund Announces 20% Cut in Allotments to Service Agencies

The Ellwood City United Fund closed the 2017 campaign on January 31, and was $ 9358.00 short of its goal of $ 50,000.00. It was hoped that donations through the spring months would fill the gap created by the shortage of the campaign. This did not happen and it is now approaching the time for the first disbursement of funds to our service agencies. The first disbursement is planned for July 10, 2017. The agencies disbursement will be cut approximately 20% of the approved allotted funds. The United Fund agencies can expect to receive between $500.00 to $1000.00 less. Connie MacDonald,…


Memorial Day Parade Photos

Veterans & family members of Veterans will be carrying photos of their loved ones once again at this year’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 29 at 10:00 am. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate as the parade is open to members of the community to join.
