Ellwood City Historical Society Remembers Memorial Day 2023 In Ellwood City

as submitted by Mob Morabito, Ellwood City Area Historical Society At Ellwood City’s Legion Park on Memorial Day, the early morning twilight was just being breached by the first rays of the rising sun as the American flag was ceremoniously raised and lowered three times before being placed at the half-staff position. This was done to honor the 159 Ellwood City Area men listed on the monuments there who gave their lives in defense of freedom. Ellwood City Historical Society Announces 2023 Scholarship Winners

Three local students were awarded scholarships at the Ellwood City Historical Society on Monday. Sam Kline and Hayden Slade were each recipients of the $1,500.00 Robert & Janice Barensfeld Scholarships and Gabrielle Davis was the recipient of the $10,000.00 Marlene Painter Scholarship.  Davis and Slade are graduating seniors at Lincoln High School and Kline is a graduating senior at Riverside School District. Baney Presents Historical Society With Booklet On Wiley Hill Baptist Church

Monday night at the monthly Ellwood City Historical Society meeting, attorney Dylan Baney presented the Society with a large booklet on the history of the Wiley Hill Baptist Church. Accepting the gift from Dylan is Andy Kindle (pictured right), first Vice President of the Historical Society. Looking on, and standing to left, is Lawrence County Commissioner, Dan Vogler. Baney graduated from Lincoln High School in 2015. He attended Slippery Rock University and obtained a Bachelors degree in political science. Ellwood City Area Historical Monthly Meeting Recap

The April 10, 2023 meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Meeting was called to order at 7:00PM by Bob Morabito, President, reminding those present of the mission of the Society. He then asked WWII Veteran Guy Prestia to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Morabito announced that Guy will celebrate his 101st birthday on Tuesday, April 25! Historical Society Monthly Meeting Recap

The March meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society was called to order on March 13th at 7:00 p.m. by its President, Bob Morabito, reminding those present of the mission of the Society. The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will hold their monthly meeting Monday, March 13th at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the History Center at 310 Fifth Street, Ellwood City, PA. The guest speaker for the evening will be Vaughn Hudspath. Vaughn has been an educator in the field of history, geography and social education at the Riverside Beaver County School District for over thirty years. Historical Society Scholarship Submission Deadline Is Quickly Approaching

ATTENTION 2023 GRADUATING SENIORS — the annual Ellwood City Area Historical Society Scholarship submission deadline is quickly approaching! The deadline is Friday, March 31, 2023 before 1:00 p.m. The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will award two $1,500.00 scholarships to two (2) graduating seniors. 2023 Graduating seniors who live in the Ellwood City School District or the Riverside High School School District who have been accepted to attend a College, Trade School, or Performing Arts School are eligible to apply. History of Ellwood City Area Churches Presented at Historical Society Meeting

It was a busy evening during the first 2023 meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society The highlight of the evening was First Vice President Andy Kindle’s very informative presentation on the history of Ellwood City area churches at the Society’s monthly public meeting at the History Center on Monday, January 9th. Hack Wilson Historical Marker Among 36 New State Historical Markers Approved

A Hack Wilson Historical Marker is among the subjects of 36 new Pennsylvania Historical Markers approved by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC). The PA state marker is to be placed on State Route 65, Woodside Avenue, by Lincoln High School baseball fields. The Ellwood City Area Historical Society was instrumental in promoting Hack Wilson’s accomplishments. Lewis Robert “Hack” Wilson (1900–1948), was born in Ellwood City and was one of baseball’s greatest power hitters in the 1920s and 1930s.
