Ellwood City Area Historical Society – July 2025 Update

The Historical Society had its monthly board meeting, July 7th. The Ways and Means committee gave its report on the donations received from the Annual Fund Drive. The Annual Fund Drive-started on June 15th and will end on August 15, 2025. Andy kindle, Fund Drive Chairman, stated the goal this year is raise $ 12,000.00, which is a third of e what our annual budget of $ 36,000. Ellwood City Historical Society Honoring Era of Penny Postcards

The use of penny postcards is long gone, but their influence can still be seen at the Ellwood City Area Historical Society. In the society’s collection are hundreds of early 1900s post cards that can be viewed to see how the town has changed in more than 100 years. The ECAHS is honoring that period of local history and has produced a set of five postcards with more contemporary scenes of Ellwood. Ellwood Historical Society Awards Scholarships

Four local high school seniors were awarded scholarships by the Ellwood City Area Historical Society on Monday night. DeLanna Fox (Riverside H.S.), Kailyn Hamilton (Lincoln H.S.), Hannah Hyde (Commonwealth Charter Academy), and Sara Schwarz (Lincoln H.S.) each received $1,500 toward their continuing education. Fox and Schwarz won Marlene Painter Scholarships with essays on “Why I Want to be a Teacher.” Hamilton and Hyde were winners of the Robert and Janice Barensfeld Scholarship. Historical Society Introducing New, Rebuilt Trolley Replica

This year is an introduction of the new, rebuilt trolley replica. The Ellwood City Historical Society is attempting to be at as many functions that The Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce and the Ellwood City Borough May have planned this year showcasing the ELLSWORTH – Harmony Short Line Trolley. Barbershop Quartets More Than You Realize

It’s not four guys wearing straw hats and standing under a lamppost. At least not any longer. At its March meeting, the Ellwood City Area Historical Society stretched the legend of the barbershop quartet into its current form during a presentation by representatives of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The “barbershoppers” introduced the roots of close harmony singing in the late 1800s which brought about the four-part quartet that we are familiar with today. Quilts and the Underground Railroad Discussed at ECAHS Feb. Meeting

More than 50 members and guests of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society were treated to a presentation of how quilts were used as guidance by the underground railroad. The presentation was given by the Reverend Jim Swanson to a crowd gathered at the meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society on Tuesday, February 11th. According to Swanson, quilts were utilized to send messages and provide directions to runaway slaves before and during the civil war. The messages were based on the designs of the quilt. 2025 Historical Society Scholarships Submission Details Announced

The EllwoodCity Area Historical Society will award four (4) fifteen hundred dollar ($1,500.00) scholarships this year. All graduating seniors living in the Ellwood City Area School District or the Riverside School District are eligible. Applications and requirements may be obtained from either high school Guidance Counselor, or from the Ellwood City Area Historical Society. The History Center at 310 5th Street is open Monday through Thursday from 10 am until 2 pm. “What’s Up, Doc?” Historical Society Public Meeting Is Monday

What’s Up, Doc? Everett Bleakney Jr., board member and past-president of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society, will be the guest speaker at the Society’s public meeting at the History Center, 310 Fifth Street, this Monday, October 14th beginning at 7:00 p.m. This entertaining presentation will be a look at the practice of medicine in Ellwood City in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Ellwood City Historical Society met this past Monday to plan its programs for the remainder of the year. The first meeting was a dinner program called “A Nite at the Races,” presented by the McElwain brothers (Floyd, Frank, and Kevin.) Historical Society To Celebrate Ellwood City Races
