Wolverines Cruise Past Mohawk, Await Senior Night Friday

Playing with some confidence, and perhaps some swagger after their rivalry victory last Friday, the Ellwood City Wolverines emerged victorious with a 58-26 win against Mohawk Area on Tuesday.  Junior Rick Pitrelli scored a game high 13 points (5-10 FG, 6 rebounds, 2 assists) for the boys team that has clinched a playoff berth and will turn its attention to Senior Night this Friday. Broc Boariu scored 17 points to lead Ellwood City to a 63-54 victory over Riverside on Friday. Ellwood City Wolverines grabbed a second quarter lead that ballooned to as many as 21 points in the third quarter, but had to withstand a furious Riverside comeback to hold on to its victory. The victory for the Wolverine boys club completed a season sweep in the ‘RivEll’ game and also clinched a playoff spot for the second consecutive year. Wolverines Defeat New Brighton, Host Riverside Friday

Ellwood City Wolverines boys basketball team won 53-34 against New Brighton on Tuesday with the help of Sean Busby, who scored team high 13 points. The Wolverines scored early, claiming a 24-12 lead at the half. Lincoln cemented their lead in the final quarter, scoring 16 points, to avenge their 2-point home loss to New Brighton in December.  Ellwood City also snapped a three game losing streak. Despite Pitrelli’s Performance From Deep, Wolverines Lose to Lincoln Park

Despite a strong performance from 3-point range from Rick Pitrelli, Ellwood City fell to top-ranked Lincoln Park 64-50 Tuesday Night in Section 1-3A play. Pitrelli connected on five 3-pointers en route to his team high 17 points (5-10 shooting, 3 rebounds, 4 assists) The junior forward connected on trifecta of deep balls in an entertaining first quarter that saw the Wolverines race out to a 17-15 lead. The Ellwood City Wolverines withstood a late comeback from rival Riverside Friday night, but held on and came out victorious with a 51-48 victory. In front of a capacity crowd at the Panther gymnasium, the Wolverines took a second quarter lead and never relinquished the lead through an fast-paced final quarter. Ellwood City saw its largest lead in the third quarter when an 11-0 scoring run – aided by eight Riverside turnovers – pushed their lead to 38-27. Wolverines Complete Comeback, Defeat Union Area 55-51

The Ellwood City Wolverines erased two 21-point deficits in the first half Thursday night in their dramatic 55-51 comeback victory against Union Area in the opening game of their Neshannock Christmas tournament. The Ellwood City basketball team and cheerleading squad celebrated senior night before Friday’s conference game against New Castle. New Castle defeated Ellwood 79-23. New Castle remains undefeated this season and are ranked number 4 in the PIAA Class AAA by the Patriot News in Harrisburg. Ellwood City managed to score 14 points in the third quarter. Anthony Roth was the high scorer with 14 points. However, Ellwood City was able to end the season with a victory when they defeated Slippery Rock 40-30 on Saturday. Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood City Girls Defeat Hopewell in Conference Game

The Ellwood City girls basketball team played two conference games this week, losing a close away game to Beaver 42-35 on Monday, Jan. 25 and defeating Hopewell 51-30 at a home game yesterday. In Monday’s game, the Lady Wolverines trailed Beaver 38-24 by the third quarter. However, a fierce counterattack in the final quarter gave Ellwood 11-4, closing the gap but not enough to even the score. For Ellwood, Breonna Streit and Karrington Ketterer led the offense with 11 points each. Nine of Streit’s points came from three-point shots. Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood City, Riverside Experience Section Losses

Riverside Girls Win One, Lose Won Defeat isn’t something the Riverside Girl’s basketball team has experienced much this season. The team started with a seven-game winning streak briefly interrupted by Neshannock before going on an eight-game streak. The last game in that streak was against Laurel in a home conference game on Monday, when Riverside won 79-50. Katie Stang and Sydney Wolf both broke 20 points, scoring 23 and 20, with the other half of Riverside’s point distributed among eight players. Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood Overcomes 10 Point Deficit For Win Against Beaver

The Ellwood City Wolverines defeated the Beaver Bobcats 61-58 in Tuesday’s home conference game. For most of the game, it didn’t seem Ellwood City would pull through. The Wolverines were left behind as the Bobcasts outscored them 29-19 in the first half. The teams scored an even 16-16 in the third quarter, so Beaver merely had to maintain its lead for the duration of the game. However, the Wolverines counterattacked, closing the gap and pulling ahead 26-13. In the last few seconds, senior Dave DeLoia hit the final field goal, securing the win.
