The Ellwood City Wolverines withstood a late comeback from rival Riverside Friday night, but held on and came out victorious with a 51-48 victory. The Ellwood City Wolverines erased two 21-point deficits in the first half Thursday night in their dramatic 55-51 comeback victory against Union Area in the opening game of their Neshannock Christmas tournament. The Ellwood City basketball team and cheerleading squad celebrated senior night before Friday’s conference game against New Castle. New Castle defeated Ellwood 79-23. New Castle remains undefeated this season and are ranked number 4 in the PIAA Class AAA by the Patriot News in Harrisburg. Ellwood City managed to score 14 points in the third quarter. Anthony Roth was the high scorer with 14 points. However, Ellwood City was able to end the season with a victory when they defeated Slippery Rock 40-30 on Saturday. The Ellwood City girls basketball team played two conference games this week, losing a close away game to Beaver 42-35 on Monday, Jan. 25 and defeating Hopewell 51-30 at a home game yesterday. In Monday’s game, the Lady Wolverines trailed Beaver 38-24 by the third quarter. However, a fierce counterattack in the final quarter gave Ellwood 11-4, closing the gap but not enough to even the score. Riverside Girls Win One, Lose Won Defeat isn’t something the Riverside Girl’s basketball team has experienced much this season. The team started with a seven-game winning streak briefly interrupted by Neshannock before going on an eight-game streak. The Ellwood City Wolverines defeated the Beaver Bobcats 61-58 in Tuesday’s home conference game. For most of the game, it didn’t seem Ellwood City would pull through. The Wolverines were left behind as the Bobcasts outscored them 29-19 in the first half. The teams scored an even 16-16 in the third quarter, so Beaver merely had to maintain its lead for the duration of the game. Basketball Week Summary: Riverside and Ellwood City Teams All Suffer Conference Losses

The Riverside Lady Panthers experienced their first lost 51-39 to hosting Neshannock in a conference game yesterday on Monday. Riverside started out in the lead, ending the first half 21-12. However, the third quarter was far from their finest moment as the Lady Panthers only saw two points to the Lady Lancers’ 14. A 25-16 final quarter saw Riverside go home defeated for the first time. The Ellwood City Wolverines and Lady Wolverines both lost conference games last week. The boys team lost to Beaver Falls on Friday and the girls to Blackhawk on Thursday. Riverside and Ellwood City clashed in a high-scoring game last night at Riverside High School. Both teams were locked in an evenly-matched struggle which remained undecided until the last two seconds with a steal and two point shot by Riverside. The game ended 71-69 with the Wolverines returning home in dismay. The second quarter ended 35-34, with Riverside leading. On Tuesday night, the Ellwood City Wolverines defeated Hopewell 59-50 in a hard fought, hard won game. The victory capped a successful back-to-back victory for Ellwood City basketball squads against the Vikings as the girls were also victorious Monday.
