Clubs, Others at BC3 Give $3,600 to Hurricane Victims

Students representing Butler County Community College clubs have donated to the American Red Cross $3,600, which a local board member says represents “a significant amount of money” to be used to help victims of recent hurricanes. BC3 nursing club members Mikayla Spreng, of Saxonburg, and Josh Cranmer, of Butler; and BC3 physical therapy assistant club members Jessica Palascak, of Cranberry Township, and Rachel Fisher, of Wolcott, N.Y., gave checks totaling $3,600 to Blessel on Oct. 9. “I am really impressed that the local community college folks have been able to come together to give us this,” said Blessel, a Butler…

BC3’s First Hospitality Forum to Cater to Job-Seeking Students

Like the mixing bowl of Hollandaise sauce warming atop a 3-quart pot of simmering water in her classroom demonstration, Jennifer Taylor’s students will pick up steam – in their preparation for employment by planning and leading Butler County Community College’s first Hospitality Management Panel Discussion. The Oct. 26 forum will provide students the opportunity to meet and query officials representing the restaurant, hotel, event planning, catering and tourism sectors that combined are expected to generate $840 million in revenue in Butler County this year, according to Jack Cohen, president of the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau. All industries that…

BC3’s Bianco Has Skin in Game on Volleyball Court

Butler, PA – Solid black lines on the hardwood floor of the Butler County Community College Field House mark the periphery of the 900-square-foot boundary intended to confine six BC3 volleyball players, 2-inch lines across which Brittney Bianco’s skin shrieks in protest as she dives for the ball and climbs in stature and national rankings. Among players on 102 squads in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division III, the 5-foot-6 sophomore is ranked No. 15 with 7.68 assists per set, assists being likely the only statistical category that reflects a setter’s abilities and one that falls short of adequately…

BC3 to Honor Shapiro, Steffler as Distinguished Alumni

Butler, PA- Butler County Community College will recognize as distinguished alumni a Butler Township woman who as a 36-year-old mother of three in 1966 was so nervous on her first day of class that she wore two different shoes, and the Valencia man with whom she would work 30 years later to help create the BC3 Alumni Association. At its Oak Hills Dinner on Saturday, BC3 will honor Lucille Shapiro and Ray D. Steffler, who as a 37-year-old freshman and father of two would later become his family’s first college graduate and BC3’s longest-serving trustee and chairman. The BC3 Alumni…

Apollo, PA – Anthony Lewis scooped the ball from the cup on No. 18 and with his free right hand extended, walked across the green at The Links at Spring Church to accept congratulations from Butler County Community College golf coach Bill Miller.  “Now,” Lewis told Miller, “I can finally break a smile.”  As could Michael Rozzi.  Lewis and Rozzi, BC3’s No. 3 and No. 4 golfers entering the two-day Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship, followed their lowest rounds of the season on Saturday with even lower ones on Sunday to finish first and second in the tournament and lead…

BC3 Golfers Eye 5th WPCC Crown in Row Behind Eye-Opening Play of Latecomer

Butler, PA – The Butler County Community College golf team’s chances – and spirits – are soaring ahead of this weekend’s Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championships, as are tee shots from Tyler Good’s newfound low-ball flight setting. While Good credits a setting he tweaked on a new driver, teammate Luke Ostermeyer credits Good for leading BC3’s…

BC3 Receives Third $1M Commitment in Past 38 Months

Butler, PA – Butler County Community College announced Friday a $1 million commitment from Janice Phillips Larrick, matching the two highest gifts in BC3’s 52-year history and representing the third such donation in the past 38 months. The commitment from Larrick, a former BC3 student, follows her $50,000 gift in March that also will benefit what BC3 President Dr. Nick Neupauer calls the school’s “hallmark” program – its highly competitive registered nursing program that accepts only 70 of its more than 200 annual applicants. “Mrs. Larrick,” Neupauer said, “is an incredibly special person. A former student at the college, she…

BC3’s Fischer Among Trailblazers in Inaugural WPCC Women’s Golf Tournament

Butler, PA – Fresh off No. 2 at Lake Arthur Golf Course, where Julia Fischer correctly reads a right-to-left sloping green and curls a 10-foot uphill putt to within 1 foot of the cup, the Butler County Community College freshman approaches the tee box on No. 3. As opponents Maggie Risher and Kylee Surike look on, Fischer retreats behind the tee on the 294-yard par-4, turns 90 degrees counterclockwise, and quickly takes one and only one practice swing with her driver. “That’s her routine,” BC3 golf coach Bill Miller said. “She takes one swing behind the ball. She does that…
