2021 Halloween Costume Contest Winners!

Congratulations to the 2021 winners of the annual EllwoodCity.org Halloween Costume Contest! The grand prize winner of the EllwoodCity.org contest was Lorenzo Geminiani, 9 months, and our second place winner was Connor Mannion. Lorenzo, dressed as the Lion from Wizard of Oz, collected over 260 likes to earn the first place cash prize. Twenty-six submitted photos were entered into the contest that ran for a full week after Halloween on our Facebook.com Page. The Riverside Panthers fell to the visiting New Brighton Lions 34-0 Friday night during its Senior Night game at Riverside Memorial Stadium. After defeating rival Ellwood City for their first victory of the season last Friday, the host Panthers found a tough match-up against New Brighton and quarterback Gary Pugh, Jr.  The Lions QB accounted for five offensive touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) accounting for all the evening’s offense. PHOTOS: Panthers Earn Homecoming Victory Over Wolverines

Sam Hughes scampered for two touchdowns to lead the Riverside Panthers to their first victory of the season, a 19-0 victory over rival Ellwood City on Friday night during Homecoming at Riverside’s Memorial Stadium. Madeline Dimeo was named Riverside Homecoming Queen during halftime. Hughes, who finished with 90 yards rushing, scored from 21 years and 19 yards while Brady Barton found the endzone on a 45 yard touchdown for the Panthers (1-4, 1-6 overall). After a year hiatus due to COVID-19, the annual Lincoln High School Pie Festival and fall sport festivities returned to Helling Stadium Friday evening. The marching band performed their 2021 pre-game and halftime shows and all fall sports teams were introduced. The community event featured delicious, handmade pies generously donated by Debbie’s Delicious Desserts. The annual Riverside community event, Panther Night, kicked off back to school season Thursday evening at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The free event offered attendees the opportunity to be introduced to fall sports teams, athletes, and enjoy fundraising booths throughout the stadium grounds.  Many booths offered food items or a raffle ticket to help support their respective organization or group. The Riverside Varsity Football team will host Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on Friday, September 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium to start their football season. Franklin Township celebrated and held their 8th Annual National Night Out Event Tuesday evening under warm, sunny skies at the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. The event featured free activities for children, fire safety, CPR training, prize giveaways, and food vendors. The popular Penguins mascot Iceburgh also made his appearance bringing joy to all those in attendance. The National Night Out initiative began in 1984 in an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

At a virtual public meeting held on Monday, Joe Neubert, project manager for Independence Excavating, announced that the realignment of Route 288 at Zelienople Road and Route 1010, Lake Road, adjacent to Runway 17 of the Zelienople Municipal Airport, will begin Monday, July 19, 2021. The road closure will begin on July 19, with signs indicating closure dates and detour signs, adding they have been given 102 calendar days for the road closure, with the road to be open on or before October 28, 2021. A walk-off single propelled Punxatawney to a 4-3 ten-inning victory over WPIAL runner-up Ellwood City in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A softball playoffs Monday afternoon at Heindl Field in DuBois. After tying the game with two outs in the seventh frame, Kaylee Guidice drove in the game-winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th for the Lady Chucks. The 10th-inning rally started with the international tie-breaker rule in place, putting a courtesy runner on second base.
