Wampum Parade Committee Thanks Participates

We are thankful to so many people for making the 43rd Wampum Parade one of the best! It takes an army of helpers to put on a parade. We are especially appreciative of the following: Thank you to the Lawrence County Court of Common Pleas Judges Dominick Motto, John Hodge and Craig Cox for serving as our Float judges. Their active role at the ballpark and at the Judges’ Stand gave our parade an air of dignity. The people who made the effort and took the time to participate with a float or by dressing as a character deserve applause….

Mysterious Mini-Nativity Appears on Municipal Building Property (Updated Dec. 16)

Update: The owner retrieved the possessions, and the borough is taking no further action. A mini-nativity scene mysteriously appeared on the Ellwood City Borough Municipal Building property near the main entrance on Lawrence Avenue. The tiny figurines were displayed in front of and on the Fireman’s Memorial. In addition, there was a sign that read “Ellwood, the city with the Nativity.” At approximately 11:15 a.m., Borough Manager Bob Villella removed the sign and Nativity and placed the items in a box. The items will be available for the owner to claim. It is unknown who placed the sign and mini-nativity…

Mayor Presents Annual “Holiday Merchant Awards”

On Thursday, Mayor Court presented his annual “Holiday Merchant Awards” to the Ellwood City Ledger and to Nancy Smith Tailor Shop for their Holiday Window displays. Both businesses were nominated by people who thought their window decorations show the true spirit of the Holiday season. Receiving a window display award sign and a gift certificate from a local restaurant for the Ellwood City Ledger was Jackie Eidenmiller, Circulation Manger, and Tina Bequeath, Publisher. Wampum Area Business Association Thanks Contributors to “Light Up the Town”

Wampum Area Business Association (WABA) and Wampum Christmas Parade would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s “Light up the Town” a success. We had an excellent turnout and a great time. Panel Approves Regulation Ending “Summer” Gasoline Mandate

Following up on a process started with the enactment last year of a law introduced by Senator Elder Vogel, a state panel approved regulations Thursday aimed at eliminating the “summer gas” requirement for western Pennsylvania. The Air Quality Technical Advisory Committee approved regulations drafted by the Department of Environmental Resources to eliminate the statutory requirements for low Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) gasoline in Western Pennsylvania. Act 50 of 2014, sponsored by Senator Vogel and signed into law on May 14, 2014, eliminates the requirements for RVP gasoline in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties during the summer…

Senate Approves Horse Racing Industry Measure

The Senate on Thursday, Dec. 10 approved an amended bill that makes substantial regulatory changes necessary to protect and bolster Pennsylvania’s horse racing industry, according to Senator Elder Vogel. House Bill 941 now includes an amendment by Senator Vogel that includes a mechanism to shift essential funds into the State Racing Fund and protect the horse racing industry in Pennsylvania. The bill returns to the House of Representative for concurrence on the amendment. The State Racing Fund is depleted and without new money horse racing at Pennsylvania’s six tracks could be suspended. Hitched and Unhitched Back

 The first Hitched and Unhitched of the new Ellwoodcity.org is now live and it’s an extra big one! Find out who took the vows in the months of September, October and November. In total, over twenty couples filed for marriage in the Ellwood City area this fall. This season was apparently not too corrosive to marriages, as only five couples filed for divorce. Three Local Child Abuse Victim Support Programs Receive Grants

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) today awarded grants to three local agencies to support their efforts to assist victims of child sexual abuse, according to Senator Elder Vogel. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Lawrence County was awarded $100,000 for Intervention Services; the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County was awarded $100,000 for its Evidence-Based Therapy Program for Survivors; and the Women’s Center of Beaver County was awarded $62,218 for Children’s Therapy and Services. The local awards were part of $3.4 million in grant funding presented to 44 entities throughout the Commonwealth that assist victims of child sexual abuse….

Coronoa D’Italia December Meeting

Corona D’Italia Lodge #807 officers, members and guests held their Christmas dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. at the Wolverine Restaurant. Attendees were greeted by the reservation committee of Treasurer Louise Vitullo and her member daughters Patti Kuhn and Maura Greco. They distributed door prize tickets and a 50/50 fundraiser ticket.
